England Premier League
Saturday 29th October 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: St. James' Park
Match Preview:
Everyone knew that Newcastle would be the next major force in English football when they were taken over by billionaires last season but for a club who were struggling in the bottom three at the beginning of the year the turnaround has been astonishing. It feels at this current time that the Magpies are well ahead of their project and that was underlined when a side who were carrying some key injuries beat Tottenham 2-1 away last weekend. That result pushed Eddie Howe’s side into the top 4.
Newcastle have 21 points and are seven behind Arsenal and have played a game more but no one is expecting them to be challenging for a league title this season. In fact no one was expecting them to be in and around the top 4 this season and they could prove to be a major surprise. The fact is the club have lost just once so far this season and are full of confidence. On form they would be in 1st place and have won 13 points from their last 15 on offer. At home they are undefeated from six games and have won 3 and drawn three but more importantly they have won their last two with victories over Brentford and Everton.
Aston Villa have a new manager in Unai Emery who has won a plethora of trophies and has never dived under a win rate of 50% for the past decade. On the face of it this appointment looks excellent for the club, but of course he will need time and playing Newcastle away in his first game is hardly one he would have cherry picked. Villa are in 15th place with 12 points and have lost 50% of their games so far but after Steven Gerrard was sacked the club beat Brentford 4-0 and a cloud seemed to have been lifted from Villa Park.
Team News:
Newcastle: Paul Dummett is out with a calf injury and no fixed return date. Alexsander Isak won’t return until after the World Cup because of a thigh injury, it’s the same problem for Matt Ritchie. Allan Saint-Maximin has recovered from injury but has a lack of match fitness and will be assessed.
Aston Villa: Ludwig Augustinsson remains a major doubt to be ready after his hamstring injury but could be assessed. Diego Carlos is out with no fixed return date with his Achilles.
Newcastle vs Aston Villa Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 1-0 to Newcastle.
The last 13 meetings have all been under 2.5 goals.
Aston Villa haven’t beaten Newcastle away from home in 17 years.
Newcastle vs Aston Villa Prediction:
There is a statistic for this meeting which is very striking, 13 games in a row to see under 2.5 goals and some may be tempted to take that at 1.91. Normally we could have expected this to be as low as 1.62 given the history, however things have changed at Newcastle. They can score goals now and frankly do not look like a side who are going to lose a lot of games this season.
Aston Villa will be very inspired by scoring 4 goals in one game and keeping a clean sheet, they had only scored seven goals for the season before beating Brentford last week. The players will want to impress their new manager who simply will not have had enough time to implement his ideas to the players, so for that this game could be gung-ho and end to end stuff, which would be brilliant to see for the neutral. There could be a lot of goals in this game and Villa are going to raise there one but we can’t see past another victory for the Magpies.
Newcastle vs Aston Villa Betting Tips:
Newcastle to beat Aston Villa at 1.80
Over 2.5 goals at 1.85
