England Premier League
Sunday 13th August 2023
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Brentford Community Stadium
Match Preview:
This season is Brentford’s 3rd consecutive in the Premier League which is a fantastic achievement given that when they returned to the top flight it was for the first time since 1948. The Bees continue to be a sting in the tail for a lot of sides and have been punching above their weight and the objective will be to see more of the same. Thomas Frank’s side finished in the top half of the table last season and to try and maintain that they have already spent over £50m this summer. In has come Nathan Collins from Wolves, Kevin Schade from SC Freiburg and Mark Flekken from the same club. David Beckham’s son Romeo has also been signed by the club for an undisclosed fee.
There has been a lot of noise around Tottenham in the build up to this season and once again it has been on Harry Kane. Will he won’t he go? You get the feeling that if left up to him he would have left the club a few years ago but club owner Daniel Levy has been stubborn about Kane leaving and when the England international can score 30 league goals, just six shy of Erling Haaland last season you can see why. Tottenham without Kane is like Wembley Stadium without the iconic twin towers. It is very possible that Kane will be transferred to Bayern Munich for a reported £94m before this game kicks off but then again it is possible that Kane will remain at the club. The problem Levy has is that if he doesn’t sell now then Kane will be able to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of this season.
Onto other matters and a significant one as the Premier League welcomes Tottenham’s new manager in Ange Postecoglou, he has been given a four year contract and is seen to have the vision to point the London club in the right direction. He also becomes the first ever Australian to manage in the Premier League. So far only one Harry has left the club in Harry Winks and they have been able to bring in a few players, most for an undisclosed fee. Dejan Kulusevski has been transferred to the club after his initial loan from Juventus. Pedro Porro has come from Sporting and James Maddison has been snapped up from relegated Leicester. Pre-season witnessed just four games with two wins and two losses. Defeats came against West Ham and Barcelona. Each game was very eventful with 23 goals scored.
Team News:
Brentford: Ivan Toney is suspended for 8 months by the FA. Frank Onyeka and Bryan Mbeumo both have dead legs and will be assessed.
Tottenham: Ryan Sessegnon is out with his hamstring. Bryan Gil looks a major doubt with a groin injury and Rodrigo Bentancur has a serious knee injury carrying over from last season and isn’t expected back until November.
Brentford vs Tottenham Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 2-2.
It’s almost been 2 years since Tottenham beat Brentford either home or away.
5 from the last 7 meetings have only seen one team to score, however the last 2 meetings have seen both teams to score.
Brentford vs Tottenham Prediction:
If Tottenham are able to come here without Harry Kane and get the win then that would be a great achievement even so early on in the season. The transfer saga has to affect the side because of the balance of it and the tactics that would be used with or without him. As we go to press we are a little blinded here as Kane is still a Tottenham player. What we do know is that even with Kane in the side Tottenham have struggled somewhat against the Bees in recent games and this being an away game it could be very tricky.
Brentford will be missing Ivan Toney and his goals for much of the season after he was suspended by the FA for betting on football games which professional players are prohibited to do, it is a big blow for them. With Kane’s future uncertain perhaps that means more chances for Richarlison up front and more goals and he could be worth looking out for on the opening weekend. We expect to see an open game with goals but would anyone be too surprised if this one finished in a draw?
Brentford vs Tottenham Betting Tips:
