England Premier League
Sunday 13th February 2022
Kick off at 2pm GMT
Venue: St. James' Park
Match Preview:
Whisper it but Newcastle have gone their last 4 games undefeated and perhaps the money being injected into the club is starting to work its magic? The Magpies last league defeat was almost 2 months ago and as a result they have climbed out of the bottom three and are in 17th place although they are only a point from 18th albeit with a superior goal difference. The bottom line for Newcastle is that they have seen good progress but are not out of the woods just yet.
Last week the Magpies confidently beat Everton 3-1 at this ground with a star showing from Allan Saint-Maximin and the club will be expecting to make St James’ Park a tough place to come too. Even with victory on Sunday Newcastle would not move up a position but they would go 4 points clear of 18th placed Norwich and have a game in hand.
Aston Villa are in 11th place with 27 points but one could argue that the team have lost their initial zip under Steven Gerrard. True the club come into this game undefeated in their last 3 but it is just one win in their last five. Many would have thought it would be two as Villa led Leeds 3-1 in their last game but, playing at home, they were stunned as Leeds came back to draw 3-3.
Villa are still yet to draw away from home and have a win/loss pattern that suggests they would lose this game. The clubs last away match ended in a 1-0 win over Everton but Gerrard’s team has lost 7 of their 11 away games so far this season.
Team News:
Newcastle: Paul Dummett is only 50/50 to return for this game after his hamstring has kept him out. Fernandez won’t return until the end of the month with his thigh injury. Kieran Trippier has a calf injury and is only 50/50 to make this game and will be assessed. An update on Callum Wilson is that he has seen a setback to his calf injury which initially ruled him out until March and the striker may now not return until May.
Aston Villa: This game looks to have come just too soon for Leon Bailey but he is being tipped to return next weekend. Emiliano Buendia has a knock and will be expected to miss out. Ezri Konsa Ngoyo is suspended for 2 games, missing this one. Bertrand Traore has a hamstring injury and is expected to miss the next 2 weeks.
Newcastle vs Aston Villa Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 1-1.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Aston Villa won 2-0.
Aston Villa have not beaten Newcastle away from home since 2005.
Newcastle vs Aston Villa Prediction:
An away win would see Villa go into 10th place and if a final placing which sees the club partake in European football this season sounds like a stretch the clubs objectives will surely be to see a top half finish to the season with the way Premier League money is distributed. That would be seen as a success for the club with the way they started the campaign.
The market is wide open in this game and even though Newcastle haven’t been too consistent in their victories over Aston Villa we should take into account that they are at home, have confidence, have new players and Villa haven’t won here for almost 17 years. So we will be backing the home side to win but with the draw covered on the refund.
Let’s also back Chris Wood to get on the score sheet. He was taken from Burnley to weaken an opponent but of course also score goals and Wood will admit that this hasn’t been a vintage season for him. But surely the service will keep improving and he could get some good opportunities in this game.
Newcastle vs Aston Villa Betting Tips:
