Match Preview:
Newcastle are being tipped to be the next Manchester City with their financial backing but last season the club also proved that with good stable management and buying just the right players without having to buy megastars they can make progress. Against the odds the Magpies qualified for the Champions League and are well on course to meet their objectives.
Last season Eddie Howe’s side were very strong at home and they will be hoping to get off to a strong start against a tricky opponent. The club has spent over £70m on two players that were relegated with their clubs last season. In came Harvey Barnes from Leicester and Tino Livramento was purchased from Southampton creating real competition in midfield. The club's biggest signing so far has been Sandro Tonali from AC Milan and the midfielder has cost them a reported £55m. Chris Wood has departed for £15m to Nottingham Forest and Allan Saint-Maximin has gone to Saudi Arabia and signed for Al Ahli for £23m.
Pre-season has been really encouraging for the club where from seven games they remained unbeaten. Highlights included beating Villarreal 4-0, a 2-0 win over Fiorentina and beating Rangers 2-1.
Aston Villa finished in 7th place last season and once Unai Emery came in for the sacked Steven Gerrard the team looked transformed. More of the same will be required this season as the club keep pushing for a European place and deep cup runs. Up until now the club have not lost any of their significant players which is always good news. Buying wise Villa have managed to acquire defender Pau Torres from Villarreal for just over £30m and they have also spent over £50m on Moussa Diaby the French international in midfield who has come from Bayer Leverkusen. Another interesting deal is Youri Tielemans who has come on a free from relegated Leicester.
Emery’s side had a decent pre-season and their last two games were eye-catching as they were able to beat Lazio 3-0 and then followed that up with a 2-1 victory away to Valencia.
Team News:
Newcastle: Emil Krafth and Joe Willock are both doubts following serious injuries from last season. Javier Manquillo is 50/50 after a groin injury but it isn’t thought to be serious. Fabian Schar has a knock and will have to be assessed.
Aston Villa: Jacob Ramsey has a foot injury and will miss at least the first month of the new campaign. Alex Moreno has a hamstring injury and is out for at least the next 2-3 weeks.

Aston Villa are a good strong side and we believe they will have a positive season but they have been unlucky to draw Newcastle in the opening game and it is away from home and we expect great things for Howe’s side. Newcastle have been a tough team to beat at home and with a great atmosphere at the weekend and the quality they have on the pitch we expect to see a home victory.
It is true that the statistics tells us that this fixture has favoured low goals but in the last two matches we have seen 4 from Newcastle and 3 from Aston Villa and so over 2.5 goals to continue for this one could be the right choice. The Magpies have a plethora of attacking choices and we expect to see a fairly open game. Villa can certainly play their part too because they are a good side and at the end of the day the pressure is on the home side to get all 3 points and none on Villa at this stage of the campaign.
