Man Utd vs Watford: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 26th February 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

One name surrounds this fixture and that is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the former Manchester United manager was sacked after Watford thrashed United back in November and you get the feeling that even though the Norwegian may have not been the right fit for the club, the players loved him and respected him. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick has some similarities to Solskjaer and that is his side have not been consistent enough. Going back to Watford you also get the feeling that the United players will be out for revenge and getting 3 points over the weekend could well end up being a huge boost for the club.

United are in 4th place but four teams are chasing them and they need to create a gap, they have found it difficult to consistently win games but come into this one game back to back victories after wins against Brighton and Leeds. The fans seem pumped again and why not? The club are surging forward, playing good attacking football and have scored 6 goals in their past two games, and many will expect more goals in this game.

Watford are in 19th place and since Roy Hodgson took over he has overseen just one win and they have lost 3 of their last four. The Hornets had to play in midweek and lost 4-1 at home to Crystal Palace, hardly great planning ahead of this game. The club are four points from safety and the writing is beginning to be shaped on the wall, but all is not lost just yet.

Away from home the Hornets actually have a better record having earned 11 points and they have only lost once in their last four travels. Their last away game was a 1-0 win over Aston Villa although it is just 3 wins so far this season but evidently the club prefer playing away from home and that could also be partly due to the pressure they are feeling from their own fans.

Team News:

Manchester United: There is no update on Edinson Cavani’s groin injury so it is likely he will remain out. Scott McTominay is ill but will be assessed ahead of the match.

Watford: Kwadwo Baah has a lack of match fitness and will be assessed, it is the same case for Peter Etebo. Joao Pedro has a knock but is being tipped to recover quickly as is Joshua King.

Man Utd vs Watford Head to Head:

The teams last played just over a year ago in the FA Cup when Manchester United won 1-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Watford beat United 4-1.

From the last 21 meetings Manchester United have won 18 of them.

There is a 60% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Man Utd vs Watford Prediction:

Manchester United have failed countless times to bring their A game to a match but when it happens and all of Old Trafford are collective as one there is something rather magic in the air in Manchester. We believe that United will not only win this game but win it well and they should have the bulk of possession. It’s got to the point that if United do not come away with victory then serious questions have to be asked, but this shouldn’t be the case.

The club didn’t play well in midweek in the Champions League but that was a tricky match that many thought they would lose away to Atletico Madrid and yet they dug in, rode their luck and came out the other end with a 1-1 draw.

Watford’s game plan will be to defend and counter, but they are facing a United side with obvious much more quality and one that looks more confident coming into this game than the last time the clubs met.
