Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

If these two teams were a film character they would be Jekyll and Hyde so when they both come together what should we expect? Earlier in the season Manchester United went to Tottenham and won 3-0 but Nuno Espirito Santo was the manager of the Londoners at that point and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge of United. So much and so little has changed since then because we have two sides who can turn on the magic just as quickly as turning it off and neither have showed real consistency throughout the season.

Ralf Rangnick is feeling the weight of what it means to be the manager even if only interim at Manchester United but at the same time he knows he will leave the club at the end of the season and can point to the fact that from 18 games managed he has lost just two. There is also a sense that Rangnick who is a very respected figure in Germany is simply in charge of a set of players who don’t understand his system and are not putting in the performances, this was clear to see as they lost 4-1 at Manchester City last weekend.

United’s last game at home ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw with Watford so they come into this fixture with no wins in their last two. There could be problems behind the scenes too with Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, both players are ‘injured’ but reports suggest that they are not and have no desire to play for Rangnick’s side, this could well have been the case for Ronaldo as he missed the match against City.

Form has been erratic for United and that is why their top 4 hopes have been dealt a blow over the past week. They are in 5th place and just a point behind Arsenal but the Gunners have 3 games in hand. Then there is their opponents who if they win their games in hand over United would go 4 points clear of them. United have won just 16 points from their last 10 games and that isn’t good enough at this level for 4th place. The club do come into this home game having remained unbeaten at home for their last four games and their last defeat here came against Wolves over two months ago.

Tottenham are in 7th place and they would go past United with a win. They have won their last two games in a row beating Leeds and Everton and scoring a stunning 9 goals in those games. On the road there has been more inconsistency winning one and losing one though their last trip to Manchester was their infamous win over Manchester City in a 3-2 thriller. Overall Tottenham have won 6 games on the road from 13.

Team News:

Manchester United: Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani could return to the team and both will be expected too at the weekend. Luke Shaw is being tipped to return after illness as is Raphael Varane.

Tottenham: Ryan Sessegnon is ruled out for at least 3 weeks with a hamstring injury. Olivier Skipp (groin) and Japhet Tanganga (knee) remain sidelined.

Man Utd vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Manchester United have won 6 of the last 10 meetings between the sides.

Last season Tottenham beat Manchester United 6-1 in this fixture.

In the last 22 meetings there has been just 1 game that finished 0-0.

In the last five meetings Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani have scored on 7 occasions against Tottenham.

Man Utd vs Tottenham Prediction:

The market is very open for this game but Manchester United are the favourites to win. This is a difficult game to predict because at one moment you think a team’s head space is clear and the focus is back on 4th place, take Tottenham’s win over Manchester City only to lose to Burnley. For United the worry is that more and more players do not believe in Rangnick being in charge and the body language of some players is clearly not good. At the same time if United click here you could see them playing wonderful football and scoring goals.

This should be nothing if else entertaining and the score draw is tempting but of course risky so to cover this an option could be backing Tottenham on the handicap. We expect goals as both sides can be leaky and hopefully the usual suspects will have their shooting boots on. But this could be a game that actually plays into Arsenal’s hands.
