Match Preview:
Manchester United were criticised in losing 7-0 to Liverpool last weekend and while that was an horrific result against one of their most fiercest rivals some perspective seemed to have been lost in the fact that United have been one of the best sides in the Premier League in the last three months. The club wasted no time in recovering from their loss by smashing Real Betis 4-1 in the first leg of their Europa League match at home. That result will go a long way and everyone will be expecting Erik ten Hag’s side to win on Sunday.
United’s last game at home in the league was a 3-0 victory over Leicester and following their win over Real Betis they have scored 7 goals in their last two home games and there we have that lucky or not so lucky number 7 come up again for Manchester United. They are indeed 7 points ahead of Liverpool which is going to be the most important statistic. As it stands United look to have very minimal chances of moving up to 2nd place as they are 9 points behind Manchester City and so 3rd place looks like their best option this season. They will need to keep up their form with Tottenham just four points behind but a top 4 finish is looking more realistic by each passing game.
Southampton remain in danger in the bottom three but it would only take one win to change their status however they have been dicing with relegation for the majority of the season now. But recent form has been more encouraging and they have won 2 of their last 3 games. These include wins over Leicester and more impressively an away victory against Chelsea. However sandwiched into this was a 1-0 loss at Leeds who have struggled themselves in this campaign so there are drawbacks to the Saints recent form. On the road Southampton have won more points with 12 so far, still they have lost 9 of their 13 games and scored just 9 goals.
Team News:
Manchester United: Anthony Martial has recovered from his hip injury and is back in training but looks unlikely to be ready for this game. Christian Eriksen is out with ankle and not due back for another six weeks.
Southampton: Carlos Alcaraz has recovered from his knee injury and will be assessed but remains at 50/50 to be ready for this game. Juan Larios and Valentino Livramento are out long term.

Man Utd vs Southampton Prediction:
Manchester United being at home espeically should have little to worry about here with their attacking options. It is true that Southampton recently stunned Chelsea away from home but United are on a different level to Graham Potter’s side this season and we see a straight forward win. However so do the bookmakers and United are 1.30 to win.
It might be worth backing the handicap on this one though for some value. We don’t see the Saints having much of a say here although of course they must battle for survival but United has so many goalscoring options and likes of Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes are rarely letting down recently and they could be the go too options once again as United try to make a top four finish more secure.
