Man Utd vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 16th October 2022
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

This is a fixture that evokes some titanic battles and goals, plenty of goals. Newcastle usually have a nightmare time at Old Trafford but they have vastly improved over the past 10 months and will try to give United a game.

Manchester United are in very good form having won 5 of their last six games the only blight was their 6-3 battering against Manchester City, but perhaps the champions are simply on a different level to any other club, and United have dusted themselves down since then. That was evident as they followed up their loss by scoring two goals past the best defence in the Premier League so far in Everton as they won 2-1. For all of their early season troubles United are in 5th place and have a game in hand over most of their rivals.

Newcastle are unbeaten in their last 4 games and have won their last two in a row. Just before then it seemed that manager Eddie Howe was feeling the pressure a little but his club have responded with some very good wins. Last weekend the Magpies destroyed Brentford 5-1 and before that put 4 goals past Fulham and that is what the new owners want to see goals, so that is 9 scored in their last two games.

The Magpies have climbed up to 6th place and would go past Manchester United with a win here. Away from home it is just one defeat so far and that came deep into injury time against Liverpool. It’s also just one loss for the season so far and the only thing that has hampered Howe’s side has been the number of games drawn.

Team News:

Manchester United: Scott McTominay is suspended because he has picked up his fifth yellow card of the season. Anthony Martial will be assessed due to a back injury. Martin Dubravka is ineligible to face his parent club. Harry Maguire misses out again due to his hamstring injury but is expected back next weekend.

Newcastle: Alexander Isak is out with a thigh injury with no fixed return date. Karl Darlow has an ongoing ankle injury but is expected back by the end of the month. Jonjo Shelvey is still out but could be back next weekend and Matt Ritchie has a calf injury and could miss the next two months.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season Manchester United won this fixture 4-1.

For 5 games in a row both teams have scored.

Newcastle haven’t won away to Manchester United in 9 years.

There is a 50% chance to see over 3.5 goals.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Prediction:

We should see a very open game but Manchester United won’t get the freedom they usually get against Newcastle, and one certain market we think will come in will be both teams to score. This is the fixture last season that marked the glorious return of Cristiano Ronaldo who also scored 2 goals, what a difference a year makes and it looks sure that the out of favour Ronaldo will be benched again. Erik ten Hag’s side have vastly improved and we expect a good performance from them against a side in Newcastle who by next season could be fancying their chances any time they play against Ten Hag’s side. But perhaps this is all happening a season too early and we expect Manchester to inflict only Newcastle’s second of the season so far on them.

We expect to see goals but maybe Ronaldo can get on the score sheet as a substitute and he’s good value to do so now, so we won’t rule him out. This has all of the ingredients of getting upstaged by some bigger games on Sunday but should be an entertaining 90 minutes of football.
