Man Utd vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 15th May 2024
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

Manchester United will finish another underwhelming season and they will be in search of a win after losing here just a few days ago against a great rival in Arsenal. The thunderstorms and part collapse of a roof that drenched the fans felt like the icing on the cake to a season of a series of disappointments. At home this once proud and strong team has lost six times and a 50% win rate at home isn’t going to cut it for a club of this size. As it stands in the league United are in 8th place with 54 points and may still finish in 7th place but even that seems like a distant thought. The club have not managed to win for the past three games with their most recent victory coming against bottom club Sheffield United three weeks ago. Erik ten Hag is feeling the pressure and it really is 50/50 whether he will be at the club next season.

Newcastle are three points ahead of their hosts but that is four as they have a much superior goal difference. The Magpies have had their problems on the road and form has been hit with a spate of injuries where the club has found it very hard to be consistent. However they do come into this clash in good form with 3 wins from their past five games and just one loss and they are unbeaten in their last three after wins over Sheffield United and Burnley and last weekend they drew at home to Brighton. Newcastle are fighting for Europe and still have an outside chance to finish in a Europa League position. Away from home Newcastle has just 5 wins so far although they will be happy that they have won two of those in their last three games, so there has even been an improvement on the road where they have really suffered so far.

Team News:

Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford will be assessed with the club hoping the duo can return. Lisandro Martinez, Mason Mount, Anthony Martial and Victor Lindelof remain doubts but have not been fully ruled out. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are all out for the season.

Newcastle: Fabian Schar remains a major doubt with a hamstring injury. Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Lewis Miley, Joseph Willock and Matt Targett are all out for the season. Sandro Tonali is suspended for the season.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 0-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Newcastle won 1-0.

Newcastle have won the last 3 meetings in a row.

5 of the past six meetings have seen under 2.5 goals.

Man Utd vs Newcastle Prediction:

Manchester United at home will be roared on by the fans and will expect a better performance against an old rival. At the same time Newcastle have thrown off that psychological nuisance that meant that teams like Manchester United would always have the upper hand on them and that doesn’t really exist anymore. Newcastle will want to finish in a higher position and they are the side with the more stable team and manager and very good form. United have the players to win the game and remain dangerous no doubt but there is a strong feeling of tension around the home side which could restrict goals a little in this game, and that could well play into the Magpies mindset.
