Man Utd vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 24th February 2019
Kick off at 2:05pm GMT
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

By far the game of the weekend is one of the greatest rivalries in world football - Manchester United and Liverpool, which just rolls off the tongue.

Man United have been in blistering form losing just 1 game from 12 under Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer and that was in the Champions League. In the Premier League they are undefeated since the Norwegian took over. United knocked Chelsea out of the FA Cup winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and the team simply look like they are getting stronger week by week.

Notice how Paul Pogba who was sent off against PSG in the Champions League reacted in the Chelsea game by scoring the winner. There is a chemistry that Solskjaer has formed between the players who had problems with Jose Mourinho and it is working out well for the club. Solsjkaer sees positivity even in negative situations.

The Red Devils have earned 13 points from their last 15 at home and their last home match ended in a 2-2 draw with Burnley after a stunning comeback.

This is Liverpool’s game in hand over City and for that they are unlucky to face such a rival away from home. Liverpool would go top even with a draw but their points advantage would be cut from at one time 7 points to just 1, the maximum points advantage come the end of the weekend would be 3.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five games and away from home they have the 2nd best record in the league. The problem of course is that they will have their Champions League knock out match against Bayern Munich on their minds, however it is clear that winning the league is the teams main priority this season.

Team News:

Manchester United: Jesse Lingard has a hamstring injury and is set to miss the next couple of weeks. Anthony Martial is also out for the same length of time with a groin injury. Marcos Rojo is pencilled in for his come back but may not start the game. Valencia could be assessed after picking up a minor knock

Liverpool: Dejan Lovren could return after his muscle injury and will be assessed. Xheridan Shaqiri will also be assessed after his muscle problem and could play

Man Utd vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Earlier this season Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-1.

Last season Liverpool won this fixture at Old Trafford 4-1.

In the last 8 meetings Manchester United have beaten Liverpool just once.

Since 2009 Liverpool have won at Old Trafford just two times.

In the last season of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s playing career with Manchester United they beat Liverpool at Old Trafford 2-0.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Prediction:

So on one hand United has a situation where if they beat Liverpool they will be helping their rival Manchester City to the league. However there is such a fierce competitve rivalry between United and Liverpool that we can expect United to take this game very seriously. United have not tasted many victories over Liverpool in the past five years and will want revenge for their earlier season loss. They will be at 100% to get this win.

As for Liverpool this is a massive match, win this and they would take a big step for the league title. It wouldn’t just be 3 points but it would act as a psychological gateway. If we can beat United away then why not any other team? However Liverpool have shown stage fright in the past few weeks and this game may just pass them by.
