England Premier League

Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford
Match Preview:
It’s 20th place v 12th, yes you are not dreaming but yes we have only played 2 games of the new Premier League season, but still not many would have predicted this. One of the biggest fixtures in English football will take place on Monday evening, and there are so many stories pre-game and so many that will follow after, so let’s start with the home team.
Manchester United have been a disaster so far, of course they have the time to recover but being bottom of the league was not on the agenda especially as they have a new manager in charge in Erik ten Hag who was supposed to be the person that would change things up at the club. In a sense he has, from a team who were still qualifying for Europe United are now a team ripe for relegation. Tongue firmly in cheek there, United will recover, but how well they will is open to debate. It was one thing losing at home to Brighton for the first time ever but quite another to be demolished by mighty Brentford in their next game and being 4-0 down by half time. United are a mess and a shambles with a goal difference of already -5. Will this be the game to get the Red Devils going again?
Normally to answer the above question it would be no, Liverpool are obviously superior but low and behold the Reds have not started well either. No defeats granted but no wins either. Two draws instead coming against teams you would have thought would have been victories in Fulham away and Crystal Palace at home. Those games ended 2-2 and 1-1 and in both occasions Liverpool were trailing. The Reds have played great football in those encounters but something is amiss in their play, their defending for now doesn’t look as solid as it should be and manager Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that his team click and get it together soon.
New signing Darwin Nunez was sent off against Palace for a head butt, and he is a big blow for Liverpool given his reputation for scoring goals, and that just compounds the problem at the club for now, still they have plenty of options up front to hurt their opponents.
Team News:
Manchester United: Anthony Martial will be assessed but is a doubt because of a lack of match fitness. Victor Lindelof has a thigh injury and is out.
Liverpool: Darwin Nunez is suspended for 3 games starting with this one for his red card last week. Joel Matip isn’t due back until next week because of his groin injury. Diogo Jota could be assessed but most believe he will just miss out. Curtis Jones looks set to miss this one due to a muscle injury. Ibrahima Konate has a knock and will be assessed. Thiago is out until October with a hamstring injury.
Man Utd vs Liverpool Head to Head:
Last season Liverpool won this fixture 5-0.
Liverpool scored 9 goals past Manchester United last season in their two games played without reply.
From the last 9 meetings Manchester United has just 1 victory.
The last 4 meetings in a row have all seen over 3.5 goals.
Man Utd vs Liverpool Prediction:
A penny for your thoughts, just what state will Manchester United’s players be in the run up to this game? They will be expected to lose and implode given the clubs recent form and work rate but maybe this is the type of game that United need. We have seen time and again when clubs can raise their game and United will be looking at the aggregate scores from last season which do not make good reading 9-0 to Liverpool. Surely we will see a committed performance from Ten Hag’s side, let us say though that this one game will tell us a lot about the new manager. Even if United lose, if they put in a strong performance, this could bode very well for the future. The worry is that United have let themselves down too many times.
As for Liverpool they are not in the same boat as United but are certainly circling the same waters. They have started with an anchor to the shoreline and they need to kick on especially if Manchester City have won on Sunday. There will be that expectancy for the club to do so and they are of course the favourites to win this game. Our conclusion is that it would be no surprise if Liverpool won, it might be a surprise if United were to implode again, when they cannot afford to though, this is why it could be a close game but we can't look past a Liverpool win.
