Man Utd vs Liverpool: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 20th October 2019
Kick off at 4.30pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

The two most successful teams in English football will lock horns on Sunday as they meet at Old Trafford.

Times have changed though and Manchester United are no longer the dominant force, Liverpool the current European champions are, and yet the Reds are still looking for their first Premier League title and their first top flight title since 1990.

United would dearly love to be the team to end Liverpool’s 100% start to the season, which has seen Jurgen Klopp’s team pull out an 8 point lead at the top of the league.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had a horrendous time as manager of United, which is odd to think when his first three months in charge were so good. But since March the club have been so poor that fans of a certain age simply cannot recognise the famous club anymore.

The Red Devils have won just 1 game in their past five and before the international break lost 1-0 away to lowly Newcastle. That fear factor that the club once had is long gone and if they were to lose this game and lose their next, it is very possible that United could be in the bottom three by the end of the month.

At home United have lost once and have gained 7 points from a possible 12. A lot rests on their 4-0 win over Chelsea on the opening weekend of the season, one could well think if that match was taking place this weekend the result would not be repeated. If United do get a win, it would feel like a shock, such is the extent of how they have fallen they could break into the top 10.

Liverpool have been superb this season just like they were last season and a lot of credit needs to go to manager Klopp who has successfully identified the clubs problems and replaced those players by superior signings, it isn’t easy to do just ask Jose Mourinho.

But some of the romanticism that surrounds the club has been damaged slightly given some of their performances. They looked unconvincing against Sheffield United and Chelsea, and against Leicester they needed a controversial penalty to see off the Foxes in the final minute of injury time.

When Liverpool are concentrating on football though there aren't many teams that are better, and they have a unique chance to come to such a great rival as Manchester United and put in a performance - there is no love lost between these two clubs.

Team News:

Manchester United: David De Gea picked up a groin injury with Spain. It is thought he won’t play but this could be a tactic from the manager, expect at least the goalkeeper to be assessed and a late decision to be made. Paul Pogba has been ruled out with an ankle injury. Diogo Dalot also has a groin injury but is expected to be ready. Mason Greenwood should be able to make the bench after a minor back injury. Aaron Wan-Bissaka did have an illness but will be fine for this game. Luke Shaw remains 50/50 with a hamstring injury

Liverpool: Alisson could return for this game after missing a chunk of the season with his calf injury. Joel Matip is back after a slight knock. Mohamed Salah also has been recovering from a knock and should be fine to play

Man Utd vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season the teams drew 0-0 at Old Trafford.

In 15 years Liverpool have only won at Old Trafford 3 times the last was in 2018 when they won 4-1.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Prediction:

This is a huge match and it feels like a mismatch too. United are a proud team who will try their best not to lose to an old enemy, but they are going to have some key players missing for this one. Liverpool will be at full strength and the only team that will beat Liverpool on Sunday is themselves by playing an out of sorts game. United are like a trapped wounded animal, and we will say that they have very little chance to get anything in this game. Solskjaer is a good footballing man, at a great club but at the wrong time, this game may well summarise for him everything that is wrong at United right now.

Man Utd vs Liverpool Betting Tips:

Liverpool to beat Manchester United at 1.72

Anytime goalscorer: Sadio Mane at 2.25

Over 10.5 corners at 1.91

Red Card in the match at 4.50
