Man Utd vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 25th May 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford

Match Preview:

Manchester United’s last game at home this season can also be the one where they confirm Champions League qualification and all they need is a draw to end Liverpool’s slim chances. United have had a bumpy ride given they have lost two games recently but they have won 3 from their last five and their last two in a row. United have overcome Wolves and Bournemouth in their last two games and while their goal rate has slowed down they are being effective and getting the job done.

Erik ten Hag’s side will have one eye on finishing as high as they can and that would be 3rd place over Newcastle but at the end of the day 4th will do but they will be determined to win this game and the omens look good. Despite starting the season slow there has been clear improvement under ten Hag and in fact the Red Devils have lost just one game at home and won 13 from 17, that is an impressive return. This includes winning their last 4 so they will start as favourites.

Chelsea have won just one game in their last ten and the highest they can finish is in 11th place in what has been a terrible season for them. Mauricio Pochettino will take over at the end of the season from the beleaguered Frank Lampard who was brought in short term but for now it has been one bad choice after another from the club owner Todd Boehly. Chelsea lost at the weekend away to Manchester City and if Lampard could take anything from that game it was that they were able to keep the score just to 1-0. With City celebrating the league title before kick off the party atmosphere and being away from home could have led to a larger more embarrassing score. Recent form has seen one win and just 4 points earned from their last 15 and on the road the misery continues with three defeats from their last 4. Away from home Chelsea have earned 19 points from a possible 54.

Team News:

Manchester United: There are no new concerns for the club but Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer are out for the season.

Chelsea: Benoit Badiashile becomes the latest injury casualty for Chelsea and he looks set to miss out here with his groin. Marcus Betinelli is sidelined with a knock. Ben Chilwell, Marc Cucarella, Reece James, Armando Broja and Mason Mount will be lucky to come back for the rest of the season. N’Golo Kante is 50/50 to return from his groin injury and Mateo Kovacic will be assessed due to a knock.

Man Utd vs Chelsea Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished in a 1-1 draw, indeed the last three meetings have all ended in the same score line.

It’s been 7 games and three years since Chelsea beat Manchester United.

There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Man Utd vs Chelsea Prediction:

This is a history of few goals and once you analyse Manchester United’s recent games they have become a team of few goals. This is their final home game so they will want to give a good performance for the fans and for Chelsea this is all about damage limitation now. The Blues need this season to end and end quickly and you can see that there is no motivation from within the team now.

Because of the above we expect United to get the 3 points and this is a fantastic chance for them to achieve this at home against a big name but one that is a shadow of the side even from just two years ago. This isn’t to discount Chelsea but we have seen zero evidence especially in the last three months that Chelsea can get anything in this game. Three points for the home team.
