England Premier League
Wednesday 6th December 2023
Kick off at 8:15pm GMT
Venue: Old Trafford
Match Preview:
Here we have two huge clubs who have been underperforming this season compared to their usual high standards so what will give at Old Trafford? Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag remains under pressure even though form has improved for United although they did lose this past weekend, 1-0 at Newcastle. United did not play well but were at least able to keep the score down. That defeat ended a three game winning run and the Red Devils come into this midweek batch of games in 7th place and are five points behind the top four.
At home United have the 9th best record which isn’t good enough for them and while they have won 4 games they have lost three here. The club's last game ended in a very close 1-0 win over Luton which hardly gets the confidence factor going and this is a club that feels like it is still struggling.
Chelsea beat Brighton at the weekend and they really needed that with a 3-2 victory. The Blues are in 10th place and are 10 points behind the top four which already is starting to look out of reach. They have won seven points from their last 15 and this is supposed to be their revival moment. They do remain an attacking threat with the quality they have but there has to be concern with the defence which has shipped 10 goals in the last three games. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have been able to win 50% of their away games and in fact have a slightly better away record than at home. They did lose 4-1 to Newcastle in their last away game but before that they had won their last three.
Team News:
Manchester United: There are no new injuries for the club but the following are still missing; Lisandro Martinez, Amad Diallo, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Jonny Evans. Mason Mount is only 50/50 to make this game and it may come too early for him but he could be back next weekend.
Chelsea: Conor Gallagher is suspended for this game, Romeo Lavia and Christopher Nkunku are nearing returns but both have fitness issues and will be assessed and a return next weekend may be more realistic. The following players remain out long term; Malo Gusto, Carney Chukwuemeka, Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell and Trevoh Chabolah.
Man Utd vs Chelsea Head to Head:
Last season Manchester United won this fixture 4-1.
In the last four meetings both teams have scored.
It’s been 10 years since Chelsea beat Manchester United away from home in a league game.
There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Man Utd vs Chelsea Prediction:
The Newcastle defeat was a slight setback for United but we have to look at their overall form which over the past month has been good although against weaker opposition, take out the loss to the Magpies and United have not been losing games, that is the positive thing to take. Chelsea’s record here is very poor and United’s performance and hunger in this game should be 100 x fold more focused than in the Newcastle game, or will it?. Back at home against a quality side United should raise their game and they are also facing a team that have had confidence problems this season. The problem is the rumours are that Ten Hag has lost the dressing room, and that can be disaster for a manager. Therefore we think Chelsea could get something from this game. It is worth backing both teams to score, which has a very good return.
