England Premier League
Wednesday 5th April 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford
Match Preview:
The Manchester United of late is starting to look like the Manchester United in the first few weeks of Erik ten Hag’s managerial career with the club and they come into this clash with no wins in their last 3 games. This has knocked United from 3rd to 5th but they would be back inside the top 4 with victory here after rivals Tottenham dropped two points against Everton on Monday.
Ten Hag’s side also have another rival for a top four spot and that is Newcastle who also play on Wednesday evening, but the Magpies laid down the gauntlet at the weekend as they beat Manchester United 2-0. The worry for Ten Hag is that his side have scored no goals in their last 3 games and because of the international break it has actually been six weeks since we witnessed life up front for the talented forward line. While overall form has been questionable United are still a side who have performed well at home with just one defeat so far and 11 points won from their last 15. Ten Hag’s team also has the best home defensive record in the league conceding just 8 goals, however despite solid home form there have been points dropped lately at Old Trafford. Those games include drawing to Leeds and bottom club Southampton.
Brentford keep fighting the good fight and they are unbeaten in their last three games and are in seventh place and just seven points behind their hosts. It seems unlikely that Thomas Frank’s side could catch up to United in the next few weeks but this game would be a stepping stone and the Bees come into this game in good solid form with just one defeat in their last five. There are goals in this side too and they have scored 6 in their last 3 games however that includes drawing their last two. Last weekend they were involved in a thriller which finished 3-3 away to Brighton.
Team News:
Manchester United: Casemiro is still suspended and won’t return for 10 days, Alejandro Garnacho is out with an ankle injury. Christain Eriksen has made quicker progress than was thought possible but a lack of match fitness will rule him out of this game.
Brentford: Frank Onyeka misses out with a hamstring injury, Vitaly Janelt has fitness issues and looks to be a major doubt for this one. Kristoffer Ajer is out with his calf.
Man Utd vs Brentford Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 3-0 to Manchester United.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Brentford stunned Manchester United by winning 4-0.
The last four meetings in a row have all seen over 2.5 goals.
Man Utd vs Brentford Prediction:
Manchester United has the team to win this game quite similar to last seasons 3-0 victory but there have to be concerns at this present time. The 7-0 battering against Liverpool however dreadful it was was clearly one of those nights but actually what is more surprising is dropping points at home to Leeds and bottom club Southampton recently. One has to wonder if the players do not have the Europa League on their minds, there is no question that United’s form has gone poor. This doesn’t mean they can’t win here and they really should on paper but they are going to come up against a a side who are fearless, scoring goals and have hunger and desire. We did see these qualities from United earlier in the year but not now.
The handicap on a Brentford victory could be the way to go, and keep an eye on Ivan Toney who has been quite of late for his standards but will relish playing in these type of fixtures as he continues to try and impress England manager Gareth Southgate. United have the quality and class to win this game and their top 4 status is under threat but recent results may have punters questioning who they back on Wednesday evening.
Man Utd vs Brentford Betting Tips:
Asian handicap (+1 Brentford) at 1.75
Anytime goalscorer: Ivan Toney at 2.75
Over 2.5 goals at 1.70
