England Premier League
Monday 2nd May 2022
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford
Match Preview:
Manchester United may well come into this game slightly flat because after Arsenal and Tottenham both won at the weekend it means that United’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season are incredibly slim. For example Arsenal only need one more win from their remaining four games to end United’s chances and that isn’t even counting what Tottenham do.
United only have themselves to blame with a season that has been dogged by inconsistency and average performances. Cristiano Ronaldo has shined though and while some critics will point out that he doesn’t back track he does score goals and to have 17 in the Premier League for his age at this level is quite remarkable. United come into this game in 6th place with 55 points and their form is not good with no wins in their last three, their last victory came back in mid-April with a 3-2 defeat of Norwich. Ralf Rangnick’s side last played a few days ago when they drew 1-1 at home to Chelsea.
Brentford have been one of the in form sides in the league and have gone unbeaten for the last four games. Three of those were wins and their last match ended in a 0-0 draw against Tottenham. The Bees would have been one of the favourites to be relegated this season but they have ensured their survival with a few games to go and that means they can play the likes of Manchester United away from home and try and enjoy themselves.
On the road Thomas Frank’s side have only won five times but three of those victories have come in their last four away games. They have also won their last two away games in a row with wins against Chelsea and Watford.
Team News:
Manchester United: Edinson Cavani is being tipped to return for this game but will have to be assessed for fitness issues, it is the same situation for Fred. Jesse Lingard missed the game v Chelsea for personal reasons but should be back for this one. Harry Maguire will be assessed for a minor knee issue but is being expected to be fit to play. Jadon Sancho is out with illness and could miss the rest of the season. Luke Shaw is out with his leg injury and may also miss the remainder of the season. Paul Pogba is out for at least 3 weeks with a calf injury.
Brentford: Sergi Canos has a hamstring injury and looks set to miss this game and not return until next week. Saman Ghoddos is out with an ankle injury. Christian Norgaard will be assessed with his shin and remains a doubt. Ethan Pinnock is expected to miss out again with his hamstring injury. Zanka is out for the season with his thigh injury.
Man Utd vs Brentford Head to Head:
This will only be the teams 15th meeting in history. Manchester United have won the most with seven.
The teams haven’t played at Old Trafford since 1975 in a league cup match which United won 2-1.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Manchester United won 3-1.
Man Utd vs Brentford Prediction:
Manchester United have repeatedly failed this season and for their standards they have had a poor campaign. This season was all about deep cup runs and qualifying for the Champions League but they will be lucky to qualify for the Europa League and that is a competition where the likes of Ronaldo who is not getting any younger does not want to participate in.
But going back to United’s failures they have ticked that box when the pressure has been on them, arguably so there is no real pressure in this game. They will know the game is up and a top 4 finish won’t be happening this season, so in a way they themselves can enjoy this game without that added pressure, in turn we might end up seeing a good United performance. We may even see a good game overall because Brentford have played some good football and are scoring goals, both teams to score looks nailed on for us. United are odds on but are a decent price considering they are at home and we will back United to get the win.
Man Utd vs Brentford Betting Tips:
Manchester United to beat Brentford at 1.70
Anytime goalscorer: Cristiano Ronaldo at 1.91
