England Premier League
Sunday 30th April 2023
Kick off at 2pm BST
Venue: Old Trafford
Match Preview:
Manchester United will set out to do two things, the first is to make their qualification for Champions League football more secure with victory and the second is to dent Aston Villa’s European hopes. United are in 4th place and have 60 points and have slipped 2 points behind Newcastle although they have a game in hand. Newcastle won’t be a concern for Erik ten Hag’s side though that threat comes from Tottenham, Aston Villa and Liverpool. Currently United have a six point advantage to those chasing clubs so a win here would be huge for them.
Form has been good for Ten Hag’s side as they have gone their last 4 games unbeaten but there has still been some question marks over the teams progress. It has been good enough no doubt if they indeed finish in the top four but letting Tottenham back into the game was not part of the script in midweek. United were winning 2-0 only for the game to finish in a 2-2 draw and it has given just a glimmer of hope for the chasing pack. At home United have been very good and stable though, with 11 wins and just 1 defeat, and they have managed to win their last two home games beating Brentford and Everton.
Aston Villa are the 2nd best team in the Premier League if we take into account the last 10 games where they have not lost and have earned a terrific 26 points in the process. Villa come into this weekend in 6th place with 54 points but need to win this game if they have hopes of finishing in an unlikely Champions League position. Form has been excellent and in midweek Unai Emery’s side won their 16th game of the season as they beat Fulham 1-0. On the road the Villains last game ended in a 1-1 draw against Brentford but there have been recent wins over Leicester and Chelsea with 11 points won on the road from their last 15 on offer.
Team News:
Manchester United: Harry Maguire is a slight doubt to return for this game after a recent knock. Alejandro Garnacho is a major doubt still as he has a lack of match fitness. Scott McTominay looks set to miss out with a knock, Raphael Varane is again a major doubt with the same problem, with no update given. Tom Heaton is out with an ankle injury and Lisandro Martinez has been ruled out for the season with a foot injury.
Aston Villa: Leon Bailey misses out due to his ongoing hamstring injury but could return next week. It is the same situation with Matthew Cash but with his calf. Phillipe Coutinho is likely to miss out again due to his hamstring but could return in 10 days. Boubacar Kamara is making progress with his ankle but is expected to miss out again.
Man Utd vs Aston Villa Head to Head:
Last season Aston Villa won this fixture 1-0.
Manchester United have won 15 from the last 20 meetings.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Aston Villa won 3-1.
There have been 14 goals in the last three meetings.
Man Utd vs Aston Villa Prediction:
This is the type of fixture where Manchester United will need to dig deep and we have seen it time and again when United have looked average but been able to beat better in form sides through their sheer determination,it is almost in their DNA and in Ten Hag they do seem to be going in the right direction even at times if it feels like they are doing so in small steps.
Aston Villa are a team full of joy, it is easy to tell that the players are the happiest they have been in years as the club try to finish the season strongly. It’s been over 10 games since they lost but this could well be a tricky game for them. United have had their problems granted but they remain much like Liverpool, a side who have still impressed at home and been solid. Villa can do the job here but we are backing United to be typically them and dig deep for the win.
