England Premier League
Saturday 19th February 2022
Kick off at 5:30pm GMT
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Match Preview:
Manchester City will have the advantage of knowing what their task is as Liverpool would have played earlier. The Reds are playing Norwich at home and will have been expected to win that game so the points difference between the two sides could be just 6 points. In that way perhaps there is some pressure on Manchester City to win a game against a difficult opponent but of course they will be favourites to do so.
City have been near flawless this season and have 63 points from a possible 75. They have won their last two games, beating Brentford and Norwich in expected wins. In midweek they lit the Champions League up by thrashing Sporting in Portugal 5-0. That tie is over now and City will surely advance to the quarter finals. At home Pep Guardiola’s side have won 10 from 12 games and lost just once and have won every game here since the beginning of November. They have been absolutely relentless and still they can’t quite shake off Liverpool, so this remains a hugely important game.
A few weeks back Tottenham could have been considered the favourites to take 4th place with the amount of games they had in hand, they still have that chance but their form does not bode well and the London club come into this game having lost their last 3. Two of those happened at home against teams you would have expected them to win in Southampton and Wolves and their last game ended in a 2-0 defeat against Bruno Lage’s side. It has been poor preparation for this game.
Tottenham have slipped to 8th place and are 7 points from their objective of 4th but do have 3 games in hand over their rivals so not all is lost. Antonio Conte’s side have not been convincing away from home though. In their last five games they have won two but those results relied on last minute injury time goals, one was heading for a draw and the other a loss. Overall earning 14 points from a possible 30 on the road doesn’t seem like a team whose objective is to finish in a Champions League place.
Team News:
Manchester City: Jack Grealish will be assessed after missing out recently with his shin injury. Gabriel Jesus has a muscle injury and there has been no update on his condition so it is presumed he will miss out again. Cole Palmer likely is also out with the same issue.
Tottenham: Eric Dier could be back for this game but is only rated as 50/50 to do so. Oliver Skipp could also return to the squad but will be assessed. Japhet Tanganga is ruled out with a knee injury.
Man City vs Tottenham Head to Head:
Last season Manchester City won this fixture 3-0.
Earlier in the season Tottenham beat Manchester City 1-0 in the reverse fixture.
Tottenham haven’t won at the Etihad since 2016.
There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals.
Man City vs Tottenham Prediction:
Tottenham can’t be shy here and need to go direct and attack but playing toe to toe with Manchester City usually results in a loss. This is about making City feel uncomfortable but the only way Tottenham will do this will be in how they start the game. The club on their day does have the team to beat City and we seen that at the beginning of the season but that doesn’t feel a matter of months away but more like years.
In truth City have the quality to blow Tottenham away and we think they will. The confidence is fantastic and they will have a plethora of chances. If Tottenham can score the first goal, Italian tactics by that man Conte may pay dividends but the bottom line is that Conte has a good team but not a great one and he knows it.
Surprises can happen but Tottenham are not generally ready for this game, we have seen enough evidence of this in their recent defeats against Chelsea, so we will say City will keep on winning, unless of course they have an off day but everything suggests that the only off day will belong exclusively to the away side.
