Man City vs Liverpool: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

The two best teams in the Premier League over the past five years will open up the 12th weekend of the Premier League season and this is a game currently between 1st and 2nd, so what more could you want?

Manchester City and Liverpool are certainly developing a huge rivalry between the clubs when it used to be from the other side in Manchester. City are top of the league but have had to suffer from some speed bumps and with 28 points they are only one in front of their visitors. Indeed we have a situation where City could end the weekend in 4th place such is the fact of this close top four bunch heading into the weekend. Form for Pep Guardiola’s side has been solid enough with 10 points earned from their last four games although before the break an epic 4-4 draw away to Chelsea ended a 3 game winning run. At home the club has a perfect 100% record after five games and are scoring on average 3 per game and have conceded just 3 goals. Their last home game finished in a 6-1 battering of Bournemouth.

Liverpool have only lost one game so far and that was the controversial one against Tottenham. They have picked up 11 points from their last five games with their latest one ending in an easy 3-0 victory at home to Brentford. The Reds look as good as ever but they are going to be judged this season on away form as we already know even a struggling Liverpool side normally get the job done at home but this won’t be the case at the weekend. This season while it is just one defeat so far the Reds have dropped points on the road and would rank in 7th place on away form only. They have drawn three games including their last trip which ended 1-1 against Luton and indeed the Reds have gone their last three away games without victory. We would have to go back 9 weeks for their last win which came against Wolves.

Team News:

Manchester City: Erling Haaland is expected to play but did have an ankle injury last week although it was said to be minor. Ederson will be assessed for a foot injury but is expected to be fine. Sergio Gomez is only 50/50 with an ankle injury and isn’t expected to be risked. Nathan Ake will be assessed for an ankle injury. Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones remain sidelined with a hamstring and muscle injury respectively.

Liverpool: Ibrahima Konate will be assessed for a muscle injury, Curtis Jones is more of a doubt with his hamstring and only 50/50 to return. Jospeh Gomez will be assessed with a knock. Stefan Bajectic is out long term with his calf. Andrew Robertson and Thiago Alcantara will not return until after the new year with respective shoulder and hip injuries.

Man City vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Last season in this fixture Manchester City won 4-1.

It’s been 8 years since Liverpool won away in a league game against Manchester City.

There is an 80% chance to see over 3.5 goals.

The last two meetings have produced 10 goals.

Man City vs Liverpool Prediction:

What is so exciting about this fixture is not only are we witnessing the two best sides in the league but we know they come equipped with goals. In most h2h’s we talk about over or under 2.5 goals but for these teams their success rate is so high for goals we have to talk about 4 goals or more. Erling Haaland will be assessed but is expected to play and he has spoken in the week how he is fired up for this game and he will need to be given that he has only managed 1 goal past the Reds from three games played. City were looking strong before the break although their away record could improve more and that is the same problem for Liverpool and given that City are home we have to back them. This is a real opportunity for Guardiola’s side to start to make that gap which in four weeks and with good form and De Bruyne returning soon could start to pay real dividends.

We have to remember that while Liverpool have recorded some good results over City at home they have by and large really struggled at the Etihad. They will have chances and should score in a game that everyone will hope will ebb and flow so expect goals too. You get the sense that Haaland will have something to settle against the Reds but there are goals all over this City side.
