Match Preview:

Because of the high standard of both sides this one game could well end up deciding who wins the Premier League title this season. It has got to the point between these two that when one of them draws it feels like a loss that lets the other side in. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have built up an incredible rivalry but what is so fulfilling about it is that they both come out as the good guys and have genuine respect for one another. There are no silly mind games before the two managers meet each other. This isn’t Alex Ferguson vs Arsene Wenger or Guardiola vs Jose Mourinho. It is simply two fantastic managers who are in charge of possibly the two best sides in Europe and we should see quite a spectacle at the Etihad on Sunday.

Manchester City are in 1st place but they have had to witness Liverpool’s slow catch up, at one point they were leading by 12 points albeit the Reds had games in hand. But Liverpool have been quite relentless since, last weekend for example they actually went top of the league for a few hours before City regained the lead.

City are in 1st place with 73 points and have won 3 of their last 5 games. Over their last 10 games they have won 23 points. That isn’t a terrible return but when your rival is Liverpool it is rather average and City have felt that failing. Liverpool have won 30 of their last 30 points and that is how high the bar is now. At home City’s record is great but it isn’t excellent having collected 34 points from 42, they have lost twice here with their most recent defeat coming against Tottenham in a 3-2 loss back in February. Harry Kane that day won the game and one wonders how failing to get the England international last summer may just come back to haunt City.

Pep Guardiola’s side have been brilliant at times this season there is no denying that but there is a feeling that they are more adept at dropping points against teams you would expect them to beat. It has been minimal this season but dropping 4 points against Crystal Palace and failing to score in two games against them was something that not many people would have seen coming.

Liverpool have not lost this year in the league and have won their last 10 games. As mentioned above they have been relentless and in that time have scored 25 goals and conceded just twice. In the last two months the Reds have conceded just 1 goal and that was against- of all teams bottom club Norwich. Away from home Liverpool have not been as efficient but still have 33 points from a possible 45 but they only have the 3rd best away record with Chelsea nipping in there in 2nd place. However the Reds have won their last 4 away games and their last was an impressive 2-0 win against Arsenal and that was when the Gunners were not only on form but a hard team to beat at the Emirates.

Team News:

Manchester City: Ruben Dias is missing with a hamstring injury and is not due back for another week at least. Cole Palmer has a foot injury with no fixed return date.

Liverpool: The Reds have no injuries coming into the game.

Man City vs Liverpool Head to Head:

Manchester City have lost just 1 game from the last 8 meetings against Liverpool.

Last season this fixture finished 1-1

Liverpool have not beaten Manchester City away from home in almost seven years.

There is a 70% chance to see both teams to score.

Man City vs Liverpool Prediction:

This might be the league title decider then again after this game there are still seven to play for both sides. But if City win they would pull 4 points clear and many would believe that the title would be theirs. Liverpool winning would move the Reds 2 points clear and the pressure would be on City not to slip up again. But who will come out as winners?

We could well have a game where both sides cancel out each other let’s remember that two of the last three games have ended in draws. But what keeps coming back time and again is how Liverpool have that goal threat from their attacking players and now have added Luis Diaz to that, yes he is more of a winger but is not afraid to come forward and search for goals. One has to wonder if not having an out and out goalscorer will catch up with City in the end? Can they really win back to back titles without a known number 9?

Manchester City actually have a very solid record over Liverpool in recent times but we wonder if the scales will be tipped this time in the Reds favour, the form coming into this game is just quite simply stunning, will it count in the end?
