England Premier League
Tuesday 14th December 2021
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Etihad Stadium
Match Preview:
Manchester City have won six games in a row and come into these midweek batch of games in 1st place and have 38 points. However both Liverpool and Chelsea are right on their heels and it only takes one slip up here and City could fall to 3rd.
Though City dominated the game against Wolves at the weekend they made heavy weather of it and only a Raheem Sterling converted penalty for the home side made the difference as City saw out the game 1-0.
City alongside Liverpool have the best form in the league and at home it is six wins from eight games and just that one defeat which came against Crystal Palace at the end of October and that is City’s last defeat too. Fans would probably be expecting more goals though and for City’s standards 18 goals from 8 games isn’t the best return however they have only conceded 3 goals at home and two of those were in one game. City have won their last 3 games at home.
Leeds lost their sixth game of the season away to Chelsea but they will feel unfortunate for doing so. Leeds gave the Blues a scare but in the end were undone by two penalty decisions with Chelsea winning the game 3-2. This has certainly been a harder season for Marcelo Bielsa and his team and they currently sit in 15th place though are 5 points clear of the relegation zone. Before the Chelsea game Leeds had gone 3 matches undefeated and were trying to find some consistency this season but the fixtures seem to be getting harder and Leeds won’t be given much of a chance to come away from the Etihad with points.
Away from home Leeds have won 6 points from a 24 and have just one win so far which came against Norwich who themselves have spent the majority of the season in last place. It’s also three games in a row since Leeds recorded victory on the road.
Team News:
Manchester City: Joao Cancelo is suspended for this game after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. Ilkay Gundogan has a back injury though it isn’t known the extent of it and he will be assessed but hasn’t been ruled out for this one. Ferran Torres isn’t due back until the New Year with his on going foot injury.
Leeds: Patrick Bamford has a muscle injury and he hasn’t been ruled out for this game but is a major doubt. Liam Cooper is out with his hamstring, Robin Koch is only 50/50 to feature after illness. Pascal Struijk could be assessed after his knee injury but it is unsure if he will play. Rodrigo has a heel injury and is ruled out.
Man City vs Leeds Head to Head:
Last season Leeds won this fixture 2-1.
Five from the last six meetings have seen both sides to score.
Manchester City haven’t beaten Leeds in the league when at home since 2003 however this is only the fourth meeting between the teams in 18 years when City have been at home.
Man City vs Leeds Prediction:
Manchester City are being quoted at (1/9) to win this game and the thinking behind that is the way Leeds play will play into City’s attacking game and we could see a few goals here for the home side. Leeds did come here last season and win but we shouldn’t read too much into that game given that City had more or less wrapped up the title by then.
City have been solid this season without perhaps being spectacular and we did discuss their lack of goals at home this season. This is a game where we believe we could see quite a few goals fly in for the home side. Leeds may feel dejected because they put in a solid shift against Chelsea last weekend but still came away with nothing. Bielsa could be best served by thinking about the other games coming up for Leeds over the Christmas period and it is hard to see past a City side who could have 20+ chances on goal. If they can score early the floodgates will open.
Man City vs Leeds Betting Tips:
Anytime goalscorer: Gabriel Jesus at 2.10
Anytime goalscorer: Raheem Sterling 2.00
