Man City vs Burnley: Preview and Prediction

Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

It’s odd to think that Manchester City are coming into this game in 13th place after 8 games played but the club have simply not been up to standards this season.

Sergio Aguero’s absence through injury has been a major factor, but you feel that the hole left by David Silva’s departure is really starting to tell. That doesn’t mean that City are easy pickings but their consistency seems to have deserted them. Last weekend they were beaten 2-0 away to Tottenham and although they created plenty of chances they also lacked that killer instinct associated with a Pep Guardiola side.

The club did receive a boost in midweek as they beat Olympiacos 1-0 in the Champions League and that could be the perfect pick me up they need ahead of a game that they will be expected to win. To date City have played just three times at home but have only the one victory, their last result here ended in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

Burnley could well be playing their toughest fixture of the season. The club have really struggled this season and could be a prime target for relegation. And yet maybe there is hope for Sean Dyche’s team who have gone their last two games unbeaten to climb up to 17th place. Last weekend they beat Crystal Palace 1-0 and that was hugely significant given it was their first win of the season.

Away from home Burnley have lost two and drawn two but they haven’t faced defeat on the road since the beginning of October.

Team News:

Manchester City: Nathan Ake has a hamstring injury and could be a doubt for this game he picked it up on international duty.

Burnley: Nick Pope looks certain to miss this game after his head injury last weekend and is being pencilled in to return at the beginning of next month. Dale Stephens is a big doubt with his hamstring injury.

Man City vs Burnley Head to Head:

Last season this fixture ended 5-0 to Manchester City.

Manchester City have won the last six meetings in a row against Burnley in all competitions.

Manchester City have scored 12 goals against Burnley in their last 3 meetings.

Man City vs Burnley Prediction:

Manchester City should win this game and anything else would really start to raise questions about where Pep Guardiola’s team are headed for this season. City are such favourites that they can’t be backed at odds of around 1.10, there is simply no value so we need to look into different markets.

One of those is to see Riyad Mahrez score, he has a very good record against Burnley. What impressed during the midweek was how hungry City looked like in Europe and despite some obvious problems this season we can’t see them losing more points at the weekend.

To their credit Burnley are much better than their position shows but they will probably have to look at the games after this one and focus on those to have a good run up until Christmas.
