Man City vs Burnley: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 22nd June 2020
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

Monday will see champions Manchester City take on Burnley in what should be, at least on paper, a straightforward home victory.

City played last week and easily beat Arsenal 3-0 at the Etihad and no one is expecting them to have too much trouble here. Pep Guardiola is a clever man and he knows it’s only a matter of time before Liverpool win the league title, but these games are very important for the club to build them up for what will really matter to him, the Champions League in August.

Guardiola will also be looking at his former club Bayern Munich who since the German league restarting have been superb, not only beating teams but playing great football and scoring lots of goals, and this will be City’s plan too. Second place isn’t really under threat and for City the objective now will be to finish the season very strongly. With the talent they have and the pressure cooker now off, this looks a formality.

Burnley come into this game in 10th place with 39 points and have a genuine chance at claiming a Europa League place so the remainder of the season is far from being a dead rubber for Sean Dyche’s team. They were on a good run and had picked up 9 points from their last 15 and without defeat were about to crack into the top 10.

Burnley have not lost away from home since January and that includes beating Manchester United along the way. Their last away game ended 0-0 v Newcastle.

Team News:

Manchester City: John Stones has an ankle injury but it is thought to be minor and could have some part in this game. Eric Garcia has a knock and is only 50/50 to make the squad.

Burnley: Ashley Barnes has been ruled out after a flare up with his older groin injury. Gundmundsson is out with a calf injury, Chris Wood has been ruled out with his achilles.

Man City vs Burnley Head to Head:

Manchester City won the reverse fixture earlier in the season 4-1.

Manchester City have won the last 3 meetings in a row and in that time have scored 10 goals.

Last season Manchester City won this fixture 5-0.

Burnley have not beaten Manchester City in the league since 2015.

Man City vs Burnley Prediction:

You can back Burnley to beat City at odds of 20.00 which should tell you everything. Surprises of course do happen in football, but just with the way City have started, their flair and speed is on the money. The fact that City were able to play beforehand and that this is Burnley’s first competitive game in 3 months is very significant too.

The away side will be without the services of striker Chris Wood who has scored 11 goals this season for them. That is roughly 35% of all of Burnley’s league goals this season, so he will be a miss. True without the fans Burnley will give it their best shot, but we could expect them to see one up front and try and defend for a draw.

City will have most of the possession, and we think they will be able to score early and break Burnley, and go on to win this game with a few goals for themselves. Backing them to win is off the map, too short, but there are other markets we can look into.
