Man City vs Brighton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 22nd October 2022
Kick off at 3pm BST
Venue: Etihad Stadium

Match Preview:

Manchester City will be itching to play football again after last weekend where they lost their first game of the season losing 1-0 away to Liverpool. They were supposed to play Arsenal in midweek but that game had to be postponed as the Gunners had to play in Europe and one may fear for Brighton coming up against a wounded animal so to speak.

Simply put the champions cannot really afford to drop points here, they are still in 2nd place but are 4 points behind league leaders Arsenal and that gap needs to be closed quickly. By Saturday evening it could be down to 1 point until Mikel Arteta’s side face Southampton away on Sunday. City have won 70% of their games so far but it could be argued that despite their brillance they have been lacking away from home winning 8 points from 15. However they are at home this weekend and their record is 100%. They have also been scarily brilliant in front of goal at the Etihad with 24 goals scored in just five games and only 5 conceded, 3 of those were in one match against Manchester United. They have scored 16 goals in their past 3 home games and of course Erling Haaland who already has 15 league goals will be up for this one again and will be a handful for the Brighon defence.

Brighton have no wins as of yet under new manager Roberto De Zerbi and he has been in charge for 4 games. It hasn’t always been easy for him having to face Liverpool and Tottenham but one would have expected something against Brentford and Nottingham Forest. The clubs last game was a 0-0 against troubled Forest. After a bright start then Brighton have slipped to 8th place with 2 points earned from the last 12 and they will be huge underdogs to get anything here.

Team News:

Manchester City: John Stones could be assessed but remains a doubt after his hamstring injury but should be back next week if he doesn’t make the cut. Kyle Walker is out for at least the next 3 weeks with a muscle injury. Kalvin Phillips is out until the end of the year with his shoulder injury.

Brighton: Levi Colwill is a major doubt with a knock but should be back the week after, Kaoru Mitoma is out for at least 2 weeks due to an ankle injury.

Man City vs Brighton Head to Head:

Last season Manchester City won this fixture 3-0.

Manchester City have scored 9 goals past Brighton in their last three meetings.

Manchester City have won 9 of the last 10 meetings.

Brighton have never beaten Manchester City away from home.

Man City vs Brighton Prediction:

Surely there is no looking past Manchester City for the win at the weekend. It isn’t just the fact that they are far superior than their opponents but also this has to be the bounce back game after the defeat against Liverpool last weekend. It would be a major surprise to see Brighton getting anything here and their form has dipped. It’s true they did manage an entertaining 3-3 draw in De Zerbi’s first game away to Liverpool, but they are up against the best side in the country and away from home. The bookies are going along the same lines of course and City are huge odds on to win the game and so that market is realistically closed for us.

Normally you would expect a side of the quality of Brighton to get some chances themselves and it has been true that City have been most awake and on their game in the 2nd half of matches, but after the defeat they will want to start this one on fire and we see absolutely no chance for the away side. Really it will be about keeping the score down to a respectable figure but if City click and they should do we should see many goals from them once again.
