England Premier League
Friday 1st September 2023
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Kenilworth Road
Match Preview:
Luton are the favourites to be relegated this season and they are searching for their first league win as they enter their third game played. The club have already conceded 7 goals and scored just once and their opening weekend match when they lost 4-1 against Brighton would have hurt. They followed that up with a 3-0 loss away to Chelsea which was expected. At the end of the day the club can point to the fact that they haven’t been able to play at home in the league and thus this game will be a historic one and the clubs first top flight league game at home in over 30 years.
There was some joy to be had in midweek for Luton though as they advanced in the EFL Cup. The club beat Gillingham 3-2 but it wouldn’t be without a scare as the away side fought back from two goals down but Luton got the job done in the end.
West Ham are not required to play league cup matches in this round as they are involved later in the month in European competition so they have had at least more of a rest coming into this game. The Hammers have started the season well and are in 2nd place and undefeated so far in their three games played. They have drawn away to Bournemouth, beat Chelsea 3-1 and last weekend they also beat Brighton by the same scoreline. Indeed the victory over Brighton was an away game where the Hammers have usually come off second best and this was seen as a great result for the club who seem to be heading in the right direction. The Hammers have also bought Mohammed Kudus from Ajax spending almost £40m on the highly rated midfielder so we will see what he can do in the Premier League.
Team News:
Luton: Jordan Clark is out with an ankle injury as is Daniel Potts. Gabriel Osho won’t return for at least three weeks due to a knee injury.
West Ham: Thomas Soucek is a doubt because of a head injury and could miss out here. Konstanttinos Mavropanos has a lack of match fitness and isn’t expected to make his debut with the club until after the international break.
Luton vs West Ham Head to Head:
The clubs have not played each other for 29 years; this was an FA Cup game in which Luton who were at home won 3-2.
The last league game the clubs played was in 1993 when Luton won 2-0.
Luton have avoided defeat in the last four meetings.
Luton vs West Ham Prediction:
In fairness we can’t go on the h2h for this fixture. Too much time has passed which has involved a generation, changing of stadiums and a changing of the game. We can only go on what we have seen from both respective sides in August. Luton have looked average but having to face both Brighton and Chelsea away, they are not easy games. It is worth noting that when Luton were a goal down to Chelsea they did have their chances but their lack of overall quality told in the end.
West Ham look like a confident side heading in the right places and they have brought in what could be good attacking quality in Kudus and Alvarez. Michail Antonio has started the campaign well too and the club for now really seem up for the battle. The most positive thing you can say about the Hammers is that they have spent the Declan Rice money well and time and again we have seen clubs like them receive a high fee and the money isn’t spent in the wisest way, so this could be telling. History says that Luton will be a banana skin for David Moyes side and they will not roll over on their first home game, but we can’t see past the Hammers here for the win. Be cautious though even though Luton have not started the season well they haven’t played at home yet and we don’t know how strong they will be here.
