Luton vs Man Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 18th February 2024
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Kenilworth Road

Match Preview:

Luton of course will be the underdogs for this game, but actually not by as much as one would think. Luton have come close to getting results at home to the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal so they will feel they have little to fear and everything to gain. Rob Edwards has done a solid job so far and Luton were one of the best in form sides this year. However last weekend a surprise happened when they were beaten by bottom club Sheffield United 3-1 and that has raised some questions. It was the perfect chance to put some distance between themselves and 18th placed Everton but coming into this game the Hatters are just a point to the advantage of the Toffees.

Luton cannot move up a place but would go 4 points clear of the bottom three with victory here. While form has improved Edwards side have still lost 7 of their 12 games here but they will want to remind themselves of a couple of weeks ago when  they smashed Brighton 4-0. Manchester United look to have finally found some form this season and have won their last 3 games in a row with victories over Wolves, West Ham and Aston Villa and they have gone their last four games unbeaten, the clubs last defeat came back in the end of December when Nottingham Forest conquered them. United have climbed to 6th place with 41 points and Europe will now be on the minds of the players. They had good news on Saturday when Tottenham lost again and so they could close the gap to just three points from 5th place. On the road so far United have won 50% of their games but lost 5 games, however maybe their overall fortunes are changing with two wins in a row. Currently United are four points ahead of seventh placed Newcastle.

Team News:

Luton: Mads Andersen, Tom Lockyer and Marvelous Nakamba are all out and that looks to be long term as there is no news about possible return dates

Manchester United: Luke Shaw will be assessed and is hopeful of playing, Lisandro Martinez won’t return for a good six weeks due to a knee injury. Anthony Martial may not be able to return for 7 weeks as he has a groin injury. Mason Mount, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Tyrell Malacia are all out

Luton vs Man Utd Head to Head:

The teams last met here in the EFL Cup back in 2020 and Manchester United won 3-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Manchester United narrowly won 1-0.

Luton vs Man Utd Prediction:

The teams have not met enough in recent times to start to compare h2h’s so let’s look at what we have on the table. Luton are a much better side than on paper and had been showing good form before the loss to Sheffield United. Absolutely the club will up their game for the visit of United and we expect a close battle in the first half. But unsurprisingly our pick will be for the United win. They are playing decent football and grinding out the wins, have they turned a corner? That is too early to say but they will want to take advantage of Tottenham’s slip up at home and put pressure on them and if they were to win some would believe that they could even be in the hunt for a top four finish which would be remarkable. Problems persist at United but this feels like the time to continue to back them.
