Luton vs Chelsea: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 30th December 2023
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: Kenilworth Road

Match Preview:

It’s been easy this season to see Luton as one of the weakest sides in the Premier League but the club have remained a difficult side to beat at home and they come into their last game of the year on a high and in form. The Hatters have won their last two games in a row beating Newcastle and Sheffield United and with 17th placed Everton losing their last two it means that Rob Edwards side are only a point from safety. In theory that is 2 points given the goal difference but a win over the Blues would propel Luton out of the bottom three, indeed they could go as far as 16th.

Chelsea continue to be hit and miss although they were able to win their latest game over Crystal Palace at home with a 2-1 victory. But even then that was a game they struggled to win and it had to take a last minute penalty to seal the deal. Given that Palace have their own problems Chelsea were expected to come away with a more convincing result. The Blues have lost 3 of their last five games and their last away game ended in a 2-1 loss against Wolves. On the road Mauricio Pochettino’s side have lost their last 4 in a row and it’s been almost two months since they last won going back to their 4-1 victory over Tottenham.

Team News:

Luton: Reece Burke could be assessed following a hamstring injury but is only 50/50 to return. Issa Kabore could return after a minor muscle injury. Jordan Clark will be assessed due to illness. Marvelous Nakamba will be assessed following a knee injury. Daniel Potts is sidelined with a hamstring injury and Tom Lockyer is expected to miss the rest of the season through illness

Chelsea: Enzo Fernadez remains a doubt with a hernia issue. Ben Chilwell, Wesley Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Marc Cucarella, Reece James, Trevoh Chabolah and Robert Sanchez are all out long term.

Luton vs Chelsea Prediction:

On paper this game would be an easy victory for Chelsea, on evidence of what we have seen so far this season it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Luton win this game or at least manage a point. Luton have been able to hold Liverpool to a draw and almost drew against both Arsenal and Manchester City here. The atmosphere around the stadium will be pumping and you get the sense that this Chelsea side will struggle here even though they boast a superior quality of player. We have witnessed it time and time again how Chelsea have let themselves down this season, we are waiting for them to click and produce their best football and they haven’t really been able to do that thus far, so why would they deserve our trust?

All of the motivation rests with the home side, the players look confident and perhaps more importantly comfortable. They have come up against the top sides here and even if they have lost by the odd goal in the final minutes they have seen that the gap hasn’t been as big as everyone had predicted. Luton have proven themselves at home and that they can rise up against the bigger and more quality sides and are 6.00 to win this game, that is great odds for a two horse race. However you may want to add a bit of safety with a positive handicap for the home side. Normally we would back Chelsea for the win and not think about it again, but we have all seen the Blues limitations this season and Luton’s fighting spirit and we believe the home side can give us a good run for our money.
