England Premier League
Tuesday 5th December 2023
Kick off at 8:15pm GMT
Venue: Kenilworth Road
Match Preview:
Luton have improved in recent weeks but they have still lost two of their last four games and will remain one of the favourites to be relegated even though they are in 17th place and safe for now. Luton hold a two point advantage over 18th and 19th placed Everton and Burnley but they face the league leaders Arsenal in midweek and would be expected to lose this game.
Last weekend the Hatters lost 3-1 against Brentford in what would have been a blow to them following their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Like many teams with relegation threatening them it will be home games that keep them up and so far home has yielded five points from a possible 18 and they have lost 50% of their games so far. But maybe there is some hope, as already mentioned Luton won their last home game against Palace and forced a 1-1 draw with Liverpool, that will give the players more confidence than they could have thought of when they take on the Gunners.
Arsenal are back on top of the Premier League and it must feel good after coming close last season. The Gunners have been the form team and have won their last 3 games beating Burnley, Brentford and Wolves- all games you would expect Mikel Arteta’s team to win. With 33 points they have moved two clear at the top from Liverpool and are three clear of the champions Manchester City. Away from home Arsenal have been solid with 13 points from 18 and they have the third best away record in the league. The Gunners last away game was a 1-0 victory over Brentford. The Gunners have struggled to score goals on the road though with 9 so far however they have only conceded 3 which is the best away defensive record in the league.
Team News:
Luton: Alfie Doughty, Tom Lockyer and Teden Mengi with respective hip, back and knee injuries will all be assessed as all are thought to be minor injuries. Marvelous Nakamba is only 50/50 to return from his knee injury. Albert Sambi-Lokonga could be set to miss out again due to recovering from his hamstring but is being tipped to return for next weekend. Cauley Woodrow, Daniel Potts, Mads Andersen and Reece Burke all remain out.
Arsenal: Fabio Vieira is suspended but he will return this weekend. Takehiro Tomiyasu has fatigue and may be rested. Emile Smith-Rowe is recovering from a knee injury and could be back this weekend but this game may have come too soon for a return. Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey are out long term with respective knee and muscle injuries.
Luton vs Arsenal Head to Head:
The clubs have played 48 games and Arsenal have won 27, Luton has 10 and there have been 11 draws.
The clubs have not played each other for 32 years in that game with Luton at home they won 1-0.
Luton vs Arsenal Prediction:
We won’t look into the h2h’s for obvious reasons but we can easily research a game like this and know that Arsenal will be expected to win and stay on top in the league. It is true that up until now Arsenal have been decent away but it has only been the odd goal which has brought them victory and that can be a risky game. Arsenal has the team to score 4 or 5 goals in midweek but we should respect Luton at home who have tried to make it as hard as possible for visiting teams.
The temperatures are close to freezing and this is an evening game and perhaps we can expect the home side to get off to the better start but as the game goes on we only see one winner and while the Gunners will be made to work hard for it they should have little trouble in getting maximum points.
