Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Anfield
Match Preview:
Yet again it seems that Liverpool need to reset the button and after showing glimpses that their bad form was behind them it has crept up once again.
Losing to Real Madrid isn’t the end of the world but losing 5-2 when 2-0 up is, it has never happened in the Champions League before and it has clearly rocked the side. The Reds followed this up with a limp 0-0 draw away to Crystal Palace and much of the media has described the team as ‘lost’. However the reality is that Liverpool could still finish 4th if they can find consistency and with them effectively out of every competition now they have to go for it and try to qualify for next seasons Champions League.
As it stands Jurgen Klopp’s team are in 7th place and 9 points behind 4th placed Tottenham however they have 2 games in hand and this game represents one of them. At home despite such a write off season Liverpool has the 5th best home record with just one defeat here and have earned 24 points form 33, they have also only conceded 9 goals and remain a difficult team to beat at home. The Reds would go into sixth place with a win here and past Fulham.
Wolves are in 15th place with 24 points and are only three points from the bottom three, a win here really would be huge not in just beating Liverpool the name but for their possible Premier League survival. Form has been decent for Julen Loptegui’s side who have lost just once in their last four. Their last game ended in a 1-1 draw away to Fulham which was seen as a good point given how strong Fulham have been this season.
Away from home Wolves have lost 50% of their games so far and won just twice. However they have gone their last two games on the road without defeat after beating Southampton and drawing against Fulham.
Team News:
Liverpool: Arthur is touch and go to return with a lack of match fitness and will be assessed. Joseph Gomez is more of a doubt and just 50/50 to return due to a muscle injury. Luis Diaz is out long term with his knee, Ibrahima Konate will be assessed due to fitness issues. Thiago Alcantara isn’t expected to return for another 2-3 weeks due to his on going hip injury.
Wolves: Hwang Hee-Chan is unlikely to feature with fitness issues following injury and is rated at 50/50. Matheus Cunha is out with an ankle injury, Boubacar Traore is 50/50 to return also but looks likely to miss out due to fitness issues.
Liverpool vs Wolves Head to Head:
Last season Liverpool won this fixture 3-1.
Because of their FA Cup matches the clubs have met 3 times already this season. Liverpool has 1 win, Wolves 1 and there has been one draw.
It’s been 12 years since Wolves beat Liverpool at away from home in the league.
Liverpool vs Wolves Prediction:
This game reminds us a little of Manchester City’s fixture with Bournemouth last weekend in the fact that at the time City just needed to change gears and beat a side that they were capable of beating but not let the game pass them by, there are plenty of banana skins in the Premier League.
Liverpool need to be purposeful and aggressive and this could well be the perfect fixture for them not to just win the game but win it convincingly, and we expect they could score a few goals here. The clubs last game at home was the 5-2 heavy loss to Real Madrid and the players will be well aware that they need to make that up to the fans and keep a top four place on course. Backing the Reds to win is 1.50 although that is going shorter but we expect to see a good performance here so we've opted for a "-1 asian handicap" to increase the odds at no extra risk.
Liverpool vs Wolves Betting Tips:
Asian handicap (-1 Liverpool) at 1.73
Anytime goalscorer: Diogo Jota at 2.50
Half Time Correct Score: 1-0 or 2-0 to Liverpool at 3.25 and 7.00
