Liverpool vs West Ham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 19th October 2022
Kick off at 7:30pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Liverpool will be on a high after beating Manchester City 1-0 at home on Sunday. Here is a team that have started the season slow by their standards and been under pressure but they played a good game and defended well against the champions and the favourites for the title this season. The win was simply a huge result for the Reds and they inflicted City’s first defeat of the season and kept one Erling Haaland quiet too.

Jurgen Klopp was sent off as the game got heated and he won’t be in the dug out for this game. The Reds are still out of the title race as it stands but a defeat against City would have sealed their fate. They come into the midweek batch of games with 13 points and are 8th place but 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal. Incidentally the Gunners do not play in these round of games, but if results go their way then Liverpool could move up a couple of places. Form has seen Klopp’s side lose just one game but draws have dogged them and they have won just 8 points from their last 15, not a terrible return but by Liverpool’s standards it simply isn’t good enough.

West Ham have been lifted up by their Europa Conference League performances and that has helped them find form in the league after a slow start. The Hammers have gone their last 3 games without defeat and drew their last 1-1 with Southampton away from home. This followed two back to back wins and David Moyes side are up to 12th place and would go past the Reds with a win here.

Away form for the Hammers has seen just one win and 3 defeats from five games and we would have to go back to August for their last win on the road. It is safe to say that West Ham will be performing better at home this season.

Team News:

Arthur is still out with a muscle injury, Naby Keita is making progress but isn’t expected back for another 10 days due to his on going muscle injury. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be assessed because of a lack of match fitness. Luis Diaz is out until the end of the year with a knee injury.

West Ham: Craig Dawson will be assessed for a dead leg, Maxwell Cornet may miss out because of his calf and Nayef Aguerd isn’t due to make his league debut for the club until the end of the month due to an on going ankle injury.

Liverpool vs West Ham Prediction:

After the highs of Sunday Liverpool need to win this game to start to believe in themselves that they can put a good run together and we can’t see past the Reds to get all 3 points here. We are seeing signs that the usual confidence is returning to the team and the one mistake that any club can make would be to think that Liverpool aren’t dangerous anymore, that isn’t the case. Perhaps the jury is still out on how they perform away from home but at Anfield Liverpool are going to be strong and let’s not forget that even when there has been a lot of criticism thrown at them this season they are still unbeaten at home.

West Ham have quality and are dangerous themselves but up to this point we haven’t seen enough to convince us that Moyes side will be on a force on the road, and we see little chance of the Hammers getting anything here. The pace will be dictated by the home side who will also have the bulk of possession and Moyes in general has a poor record against the quality sides in the Premier League.
