Liverpool vs Watford: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 14th December 2019
Kick off at 12:30pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Liverpool will be the massive odds on favourites when they take on Watford at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime, which will see the team in 1st place take on the team in last.

Liverpool did have to play in midweek in the Champions League in a game that could have potentially ended up being a banana skin away to Salzburg, a very attacking side, but like true European champions they came through and won 2-0. This was excellent news for Jurgen Klopp’s team who qualified as group winners as a result.

Domestically Liverpool have been par excellence and are unbeaten this season, which has now stretched to 16 games. They have an 8 point lead at the top to Leicester and are a massive 14 points ahead of champions Manchester City. Life couldn’t be rosier for the Reds. At home Liverpool have maximum points, 24 from 8 games and are scoring 3 goals a game on average. Their last match at Anfield ended in an emphatic 5-2 victory over city rivals Everton.

As for Watford, in comes the clubs 3rd manager of the season in Nigel Pearson who will take charge of his first game and what a daunting one to start his career at the club. Pearson’s former club was Belgian team OH Leuven where he only had a 32% win rate, but he has been brought into Watford because of his extensive experience in the Premier League, which has included spells at Leicester and Southampton.

The Hornets have won just 1 game so far this season and are 6 points from safety. Their last match ended in a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, and given that the game ended a 3 game losing streak this was seen as a decent result for the club. They have scored just 5 goals on the road so far and have won just once, picking up 5 points from a possible 24.

Team News:

Liverpool: Adam Lallana has a minor knock but should have recovered for this game. Dejan Lovren received a knock in midweek and he will be assessed for this match

Watford: The Hornets have six regular players out who have been missing for the past few weeks, however they have no new injury concerns coming into this game.

Liverpool vs Watford Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this game 5-0.

In Liverpool’s last 3 meetings that have taken place at Anfield against Watford they have scored 16 goals.

Watford have won just once against Liverpool in 12 games and that victory was when they were at home

Liverpool vs Watford Prediction:

You can’t back Liverpool at the prices being quoted around 1.10 to win but that is only fair enough when you see the gulf between the teams. If Watford were to win this game it would easily be the shock of the season and the bookmakers realise this and the away side are price up at 17.00 to win with some bookies.

Instead then we will concentrate on the goals market. Liverpool do have quite a congested fixture list coming up, which includes having to jet off and play in the FIFA World Club Cup, but with Champions League football over you feel that the side can mostly just concentrate on the league and keep their minds focused to perform well. Take note, this will be Liverpool’s last match at home before Christmas and it feels almost inevitable that the club will sign off with a great performance and goals. There just doesn’t seem any way that we can see how Watford are going to get anything from this game and keep the score low. We also think Liverpool will come out of the blocks fast, therefore we're backing them to be winning at half time and full time. Finally, Mohamed Salah had scored 6 times in his last 4 meetings with Watford so with odds of 1.79 to score, he looks great value to get a goal in this game.

Liverpool vs Watford Betting Tips:

Liverpool to score 3+ goals at 1.72

Half time/full time (Liverpool/Liverpool) at 1.57

Anytime goalscorer: Mohamed Salah at 1.79
