Liverpool vs Tottenham: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 16th December 2020
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

The biggest game in this Premier League season will take place on Wednesday evening given that these teams are 1st and 2nd and what a game we should witness at Anfield.

Liverpool have been good without being anywhere near as dominant as last season and have dropped points here and there and as a result they haven’t been able to really get going. The pattern for the Reds right now is win, draw, win, draw and the club have really been frustrating away from home. However it is a different story at home where, like last season, they remain brilliantly dominant. Liverpool have won all six games so far and have scored 18 goals, so are averaging 3 goals per home match. Their last home game ended in a 4-0 win over Wolves.

Last weekend though highlighted the problems Liverpool have been facing on the road and drawing 1-1 with Fulham just isn’t going to cut it for the defending champions with so many teams hot on their trail.

Tottenham have surprised many and come into this match as league leaders and manager Jose Mourinho has already been using the classic mind games on Jurgen Klopp. It had been suggested that Liverpool would be carrying significant injuries coming into this game and Mourinho pointed out that apart from Virgil van Dijk who is a long term injury this season the club have no major worries.

Tottenham have been very good but at the same time have dropped points too, with two draws in their last 3 games. Last weekend they drew against Crystal Palace after leading the game, and as good as Tottenham have been this season one gets the idea that they could have been six or seven points clear if not for dropping silly points when in charge of matches.

Away from home Tottenham are unbeaten but they have drawn their last 2 games in a row. They are scoring goals though and on average have 2 a game and have only conceded 4.

Team News:

Liverpool: Naby Keita should be back after some fitness issues meant he missed the last game. Joel Matip had a slight back problem but is being tipped to be fine for this game. James Milner looks like he will miss another match with his muscle injury and Diogo Jota has been confirmed to miss at least the next four weeks with his knee injury which happened earlier this month.

Tottenham: Gareth Bale missed the last game through illness and he will face a late assessment. Erik Lamela isn’t expected back until the Christmas period of games.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this match 2-1.

Liverpool have won the last 4 league meetings against Tottenham.

Tottenham have not won at Anfield since 2011 in the league.

5 of the last six meetings has seen both teams to score.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Prediction:

As champions the pressure is more on Liverpool and even though Tottenham wouldn’t want to lose, if they do it would be no shame away to the current champions.

In truth whilst Liverpool have been good and stable they haven’t been magnificent this season and one wonders if that will play on the team as they play an opposition which could well end up being a title rival.

Liverpool are odds on to win but in 1.80 they are value considering their fantastic home record which has gone over 30 games unbeaten in the league. If the defence can nullify Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane then they stop the supply of goals, the pair have almost 90% of Tottenham’s goals this season, and that has to be key.

This is a game that could well be played in the midfield and we don’t expect an open match. Mourinho set up his team much in the way against another title rival in Chelsea to draw the game, here he will want to win because it will make a statement to the rest of the league that Tottenham are serious title contenders. But can they do it? Can they find a way to beat Liverpool who will have some fans in the stadium in an evening game, that is the question being asked and at this moment, they may just come up short.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Betting Tips:
