Liverpool vs Tottenham: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 5th May 2024
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Both Liverpool and Tottenham will have something in common here in that both sides have become the almost and nearly ones. For Liverpool they will have to accept that their league title challenge is over even if not mathematically as of yet and for Tottenham that their top four hopes look over also.

Liverpool will want to put in a good display at home and despite the recent disappointments manager Jurgen Klopp will understand that the fans will be right behind them and will want to see a good display and good football come Sunday. But there does seem to be a dampener about proceedings with the Reds on 75 points, the most they can get now is 84 and Arsenal and Manchester City already have 83 and 82 respectively. Liverpool have imploded and have just 1 win in their past five games where they have won 5 points. The clubs last game ended in a 2-2 draw with West Ham away, they have also recently lost 2-0 against Everton. Liverpool’s last home game was their first league defeat here this season and the unlikely side to beat them was Crystal Palace as the Eagles flew off with a 1-0 win. This hasn’t been the greatest of times to be a Liverpool supporter.

Tottenham come into this game in 5th place and are seven points adrift of Aston Villa. They would need Villa to lose or draw in their match against Brighton on the same day and win here to have any chance of usurping them for fourth position. Form doesn’t bode well though and the club have lost their last 3 games in a row. Tottenham’s last away match which was their latest game ended in a 2-0 loss against Chelsea and on the road while the club has the 5th best record in the league their recent away form has been poor. The club haven’t won away since beating Aston Villa- of all teams 4-0 almost two months ago. That game seemed to signal Villa’s demise and Tottenham marching forward, but it hasn’t happened.

Team News:

Liverpool: Virgil van Dijk has a knock and will be assessed, Conor Bradley will be assessed with fitness issues but he could return for this game. Diogo Jota is not expected back for another week as he recovers from a hip injury. Ben Doak, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip all look out for the season although there is hope that Matip could return by the end of the season as he has a knee injury.

Tottenham: Timo Werner has been ruled out for the season with a hamstring injury. There are long term injuries too Destiny Undogie, Ryan Sessegnon, Ben Davies, Manor Soloman and Fraser Forster

Liverpool vs Tottenham Head to Head:

Last season in this fixture we seen a seven goal thriller which ended 4-3 to Liverpool.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Tottenham won 2-1.

The last 7 meetings in a row have all seen both teams to score.

It’s been almost 13 years since Tottenham beat Liverpool away from home in the league.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Prediction:

This is a fixture that can produce lots of end to end play and excitement and that means goals and we think there will be plenty to see here. Liverpool will play with more freedom even if they may be feeling sorry for themselves their fans won’t allow it and they are playing a side that look all lost at sea. From Tottenham’s perspective that is sad because they still have a small chance to finish in the top four but they are coming up against a quality side away from home on dismal form and we only see one winner here. The market for plenty of goals is a good one and most punters should be focusing on this one.
