Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Thursday 2nd January 2020
Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Liverpool just did enough to beat Wolves 1-0 although there were some VAR decisions that overshadowed a Liverpool game once more. In truth the decisions were good ones, but Wolves were right to be aggrieved by their offside goal, a toe is never cheating and maybe the benefit of the doubt should be in place for VAR whose name could also mean Mr.Jobs worth. There does seem to be a lack of common sense with the technology and the decisions dished out. Still that argument is for another day and what cannot be denied is how good Liverpool have been this season.

At home they have a 100% record played 10 won 10. And of course the club are still unbeaten this season. They have only lost 1 game in the league in almost a year and look unbeatable currently.

In the league they are 13 points in front of Leicester and have a game in hand and it would need to take the biggest of collapses to see Liverpool not lift the league title.

Sheffield United have been great this season and are in 8th place with 29 points. Although the Blades have gone their last two games without a win, they lost 2-0 to Manchester City away in their last match, which isn’t a surprise really.

United has the 5th best away record in the league where they have won points in 50% of their games. The loss to City was remarkably their first defeat away from home this season. A shock win at the weekend could take the club into the top six.

Team News:

Liverpool: The only new injury for the club is Xherdan Shaqiri who has a hamstring injury and is set to miss the next 10 days, that would also rule him out of the derby v Everton in the FA Cup

Sheffield United: John Lundstram has a knock and is a doubt. Simon Moore may also miss out again with his groin

Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd Head to Head:

The teams have not met at Anfield since 2007 when Liverpool won 4-0.

Earlier this season Liverpool won the reverse fixture 1-0.

The clubs have only played each other 3 times in the recent era and there is a 66% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd Prediction:

Liverpool will be too strong and we don’t expect the club to lose any games at home anyway. The other teams namely Leicester and Manchester City can only hope for a draw and dropped points here, a loss just seems too far fetched now. Liverpool’s biggest enemy remains themselves and complacency but manager Jurgen Klopp has been here many times before and he has a well drilled team. Liverpool are not great value so instead we will take them to be winning at half time and full time. Sadio Mane has the bit between his teeth and so does Roberto Firmino so we will back one of them to score again. Liverpool will have to work hard for their win again but we expect them to ease to another three points here.

Liverpool vs Sheffield Utd Betting Tips:

Half Time/Full Time: Liverpool/Liverpool at 1.80

Anytime goalscorer: Roberto Firmino at 2.50

Correct Score: Liverpool to win 2-0 or 3-0 at 7.50 and 9.00
