Venue: Anfield
Match Preview:
The Saturday lunch time match will see Liverpool try to further claim their chances for a top four finish against Newcastle who have already taken huge strides to ensure their Premier League survival.
Liverpool would have never believed that their own fans would burn shirts of the club but less than a year after winning their first league title that’s what happened this week after the Super League fiasco. Liverpool quickly withdrew. But one has to wonder if the fans will truly forgive the clubs American owners? In the midst of this controversy Liverpool had a game to play in midweek and they dropped 2 points as they let a 1 goal lead slip to draw 1-1 against Leeds. This result has left the Reds in 6th place but they are only 2 points from 4th.
Despite the draw against Leeds the good news for the champions is that form looks to have turned around and they have gone their last 4 games unbeaten, with three of those finishing as wins. Their last home game ended in a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa and they will be the odds on favourites to beat the Magpies.
A few weeks ago Newcastle looked like they would get involved in a relegation battle but the club look in a much better place now. Currently Steve Bruce’s team are 8 points from the drop zone and have a game in hand over 18th placed Fulham. Newcastle have won back to back games coming into this game, and last weekend they were able to beat West Ham 3-2 in a huge win for the club. They have also gone their last 3 games undefeated with their last loss occurring a month ago in a 3-0 defeat against Brighton. A surprise win at Anfield could take the club up to 13th place.
Team News:
Liverpool: Curtis Jones could return for this game after his muscle injury. Divock Origi is a long term injury with a muscle injury. Nathaniel Phillips is being tipped to return after a minor hamstring injury. Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk are long term injuries.
Newcastle: Ryan Fraser will be assessed but has an ongoing groin injury and looks set to miss this game. Jamaal Lascelles could miss the next 3-4 weeks with a foot injury. Allan Saint-Maximin has a minor ankle injury and is expected to be involved in this game.
Liverpool vs Newcastle Head to Head:
Earlier in the season this fixture finished 0-0 that was the first goalless game between the two sides since 1974.
Last season Liverpool won this fixture 3-1.
Newcastle have not beaten Liverpool at Anfield since 1995.
3 of the last four meetings has seen both teams to score.
Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction:
It wouldn’t be the biggest surprise if Steve Bruce has written off this game in his head, away to Liverpool has usually meant a defeat for Newcastle and after their recent good form they could afford a loss here. The good news for Bruce though is that his team can play with a little freedom against a side who have not been at their strongest since November. History points to goals and both teams to score and this seems apt for this fixture. Newcastle will get chances and will take risks.
Liverpool should have more than enough to win the game although perhaps different markets are the way to go with this game considering the lack of value backing Liverpool to win. Sadio Mane usually has a good time against Newcastle and it was interesting to see him get back on the goalscorer’s list in midweek, a goal is so huge for striker and that may get him up and running once more and he should be followed in this game.
Liverpool vs Newcastle Betting Tips:
Half time/full time (Liverpool/Liverpool) at 1.72
Anytime goalscorer: Sadio Mane at 2.00
Total goals (Over 2.5) at 1.50
