Liverpool vs Newcastle: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 14th September 2019
Kick off at 12.30pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

The Saturday lunch time game will take place between Liverpool and Newcastle where we are instantly reminded of some their classic encounters in the 1990s. Times have changed, and whilst Newcastle have struggled in recent years Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp are 10 times the team they were 20 years ago, and they will start this game as the massive odds on favourites.

The Reds are the only team in the Premier League to have a 100% record coming into this 5th game of the season. Liverpool will be keeping an eye on current champions Manchester City who are unbeaten but are two points behind last seasons runners up and the Champions League winners.

Liverpool have been brilliant already this season and if they win this game it will be their 14th league win in a row counting the back end of last season. All over the team look strong, confident, super quick and there is a great vibe around them.

Newcastle have already had their ups and downs this season under incoming manager Steve Bruce. They started the season in poor form losing their opening two games but then stunned Tottenham in London with a 1-0 win and then drew their last game against Watford at home.

Nobody will be giving the Magpies a chance at the weekend but then again nobody did against Tottenham. But it’s difficult to see how Bruce will line up his team to be attacking, the best he will be thinking will be to come away with a point at Anfield and defend very deep leaving Joelinton perhaps up on his own.

Team News:

Liverpool: The Reds have been coy on goalkeeper Alisson’s return from a calf injury. The Brazilian has returned to light training but will almost certainly miss this game. Naby Keita looks like he will miss this game with an ongoing muscle injury otherwise Liverpool have a full team

Newcastle: Andy Carroll should return by the end of the month but still has fitness issues. Matt Ritchie has an ankle injury sustained a few weeks ago and will miss at least the next 2 months. Allan Saint-Maximin has a hamstring injury and may be out for the rest of the month

Liverpool vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Liverpool have won the last 3 meetings in a row.

Last season this fixture finished 4-0 to Liverpool.

Newcastle have not beaten Liverpool in the Premier League at Anfield for 25 years.

This fixture has had no 0-0 results in over 15 years.

Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction:

No one will be backing Liverpool where the odds are under 1.10. Some may like to go for Newcastle where you can get odds of around 25.00 with some bookmakers. In reality if Liverpool are going to slip up this season we believe it will happen away from home and not at Anfield. The day will be set up well for the club and they are just ready to roll. Klopp will be happy that his players will be returning from international duty unscathed and all will be happy to be under his guidance once more.

The match should be a predictable one in that Liverpool will have most of the ball and attack, Newcastle’s job here is to frustrate them. We can’t see it lasting long, but at the same time nothing suggests that Bruce’s team can’t stay organised at least in the first half and we have to remember that the Magpies have conceded 1 goal in their past two matches. But Liverpool will be too strong evidently and we don’t expect any surprises here.
