Liverpool vs Newcastle: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Kick off at 8pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

It’s possible that Liverpool could come into this game having been knocked off top position but for now the league is in their hands and whatever happens as long as they beat Newcastle they would remain in 1st place as league games after this will take a break for the FA Cup.

Liverpool have 42 points and Aston Villa have now joined them on the same points, Arsenal and of course Manchester City are in the mix too and this is shaping up to be a very exciting Premier League season with not one or two clubs but at least four in the title hunt. Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five games and have won 3 and drawn 2, their last match ended in an expected 2-0 win over Burnley away from home. Even though the Clarets are in 19th place these games can end up being the banana skins but for now Jurgen Klopp’s side is passing all of the tests. At home Liverpool are unbeaten but they have drawn their last two games in a row which have come against Manchester United and Arsenal.

Newcastle are going through a poor spell and have dropped to 9th place after losing 4 of their last five games. Manager Eddie Howe will be under pressure to keep his job but at the same time the Magpies have had to deal with many injuries and then there was the sudden suspension of new £55m signing Sandro Tonali. But the defeats keep coming and their last game would have really hurt the club. Despite this crisis at Newcastle their home form has been superb but in their last game they lost 3-1 at home against Nottingham Forest despite leading in that game. The club are a whopping 11 points from a top four finish which they achieved last season and it’s been a very miserable period for the club. On the road Newcastle have the 2nd to worst record and have only earned 5 points from 27 they have won just once and lost 6 games from nine, this includes losing their last four games in a row and their last away game ended in a 1-0 defeat against lowly Luton.

Team News:

Liverpool: Mohamed Salah is unavailable as he is on international duty. Alexis MacAllister is just 50/50 to return for this game after his knee injury but will be assessed. Stefan Bajcetic’s return from a calf injury has been delayed until the end of January. Ben Doak is out with a knee injury with no fixed return date. Andrew Robertson isn’t expected back for four weeks due to an ongoing shoulder injury and Thiago Alcantara’s return from a hip injury has been extended and he also isn’t due back for another four weeks.

Newcastle: Jamaal Lascelles has made a good recovery from a hip injury and is in contention to play here but will be assessed first. Joseph Willock, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes and Elliot Anderson are all not due back for at least another two weeks. Javier Manquillo is out long term with a groin injury. Nick Pope has been ruled out until April with a shoulder injury, Matt Targett isn’t scheduled to return for another five weeks due to his hamstring and Sandro Tonali is suspended for the season.

Liverpool vs Newcastle Head to Head:

Liverpool vs Newcastle Prediction:

Of course any club would miss the services of Mohamed Salah and he will be unavailable perhaps for a month as he is at the African Cup of Nations now. But Liverpool are so much more than Salah and they have been able to welcome back the talents of Diogo Jota recently. Liverpool have been solid and dangerous and there have only been the slight blips so far, let’s remember this is a team that have only managed 1 defeat in 19 games and at home especially they will feel confident of getting the job done. Liverpool also has a fantastic record over Newcastle and they are facing the not the best version of the Magpies since Eddie Howe took over. This is a side that can be got at, and we expect their poor run to continue in this game.

Even when Newcastle greatly improved last season Liverpool was still able to beat them, and the Magpies have not reached the level you need to consistently mix with the bigger sides, we expect a good home victory where Klopp’s team should dominate.
