Liverpool vs Man Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

One of the great English football fixtures will take place in midweek and even though Manchester United are no longer title threats and Liverpool have moved several levels ahead of them this is always a grudge match.

We are or course looking at the two most successful teams in English football history and aside from bragging rights there is so much to play for here. Liverpool would go top of the league with a win albeit Manchester City will be playing the next day. But going top would be significant for the Reds as they try and continue their superb form. Last weekend Jurgen Klopp’s side were involved in an even bigger game as they drew 2-2 at Manchester City, and when you have so much to play for, in Liverpool’s case the quadruple then the tough games are going to come thick and fast.

Liverpool were involved in the FA Cup at the weekend and they beat Manchester City 3-2 to reach the final. The Reds had raced into a 3-0 lead at Wembley. In the Champions League Liverpool have reached the semi-finals after knocking out Benfica and they will be the favourites to reach the final as they will be playing Villarreal. What a time it is to be a Liverpool fan and let’s also remind ourselves that the club are unbeaten in the league at home.

Manchester United beat Norwich 3-2 and we witnessed why Cristiano Ronaldo makes the difference for the club as he scored his second hat trick of the season for them. At times Ronaldo may have been United’s Achilles heel (he doesn’t track back) and it is easy to throw accusation at him. But he is 37 and has scored 15 goals in the league and is simply a world class player who does his job. What would United have done without him, playing against the bottom side? The flip side to all of this is what United team would be leading 2-0 against Norwich only to be pegged back to 2-2. It took a stunning Ronaldo freekick to win the game, and no matter his legendary status should Man Utd be relying on their veteran player to keep getting them out of trouble?

United’s consistency has been beyond poor this season and for their standards this season has felt like a write off. And yet here we are United still has a chance to get 4th place because the teams in front of them are also losing key games. Both Tottenham and Arsenal lost at the weekend and that has let Ralf Rangnick’s side in once again and they are in 5th place and 3 points behind Tottenham with the same games played. Recent form for United has seen them collect seven points from the last 15 and that isn’t good enough at this stage of the season. They will come into this game the big underdogs to get anything here.

Team News:

Liverpool: There are no injuries for the club ahead of this game.

Manchester United: Fred has a hip injury which saw him miss the game at the weekend, and he remains a doubt for this one also. Edinson Cavani looks set to miss the rest of the month with his on going calf injury. Scott McTominay could miss out again with his foot injury. Raphael Varane has a knock and is only 50/50 to return. Luke Shaw has a leg injury and could well miss the rest of the season.

Liverpool vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 2-0.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Liverpool thumped United 5-0.

Manchester United haven’t beaten Liverpool in the league for 3 years.

Liverpool have scored 9 goals in the last two meetings between the clubs.

Liverpool vs Man Utd Prediction:

Manchester United on their greatest day and when everything clicks has the team to beat Liverpool but let’s face it who can see that happening on Tuesday night? The atmosphere will be electric at Anfield and Liverpool should be able to ease to a win. United have to play their part but the worry is that when they open themselves up to attack they will leave gaps. One really has to worry about United’s defence which has looked poor this season but looks almost amateur in recent weeks.

We only see Liverpool winning the game though they are huge odds on so we will look into different markets. There are so many goalscoring opportunities for the Reds it is worth keeping an eye on Mohamed Salah whose goals have dried up just as his contract talks have become intense it is worth noting that Salah scored a hat trick last time out against United and has an astounding 6 goals in his last 3 games against Man Utd.
