Liverpool vs Man Utd: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 17th December 2023
Kick off at 4:30pm GMT
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

The two most successful teams in English history will clash on Sunday to round up another Premier League weekend and opportunity has come knocking for Liverpool. At home Liverpool will be the favourites to win and will be expected to given Manchester United’s erratic form. Manchester City who remain the closest threat for a league title have dropped many points in the past month and the Reds have the chance to move 7 points clear of the champions with victory.

Liverpool with 37 points came into this weekend in 1st place and one point ahead of Arsenal. Form has been very good with 13 points earned from their last 15 and that includes three wins in a row which have come against Fulham, Sheffield United and Crystal Palace. One could argue that those games would have been expected results but with just one defeat so far Jurgen Klopp’s have to be considered as amongst the title favourites. Liverpool also has a 100% home win record scoring 21 goals and conceding just 5.

Manchester United crashed out of European football in midweek finishing bottom of their group. Take out Bayern Munich and couldn’t we ask would an older United side not have qualified from a group containing Copenhagen and Galatasaray. Although at times form has improved for United their Champions League performances have been reflective on the Erik ten Hag era and perhaps this is where the club needs to be measured and judged. The objective this season will be to return to Champions League football but the club find themselves 7 points from that target. Recent form has seen two defeats from their last three games and last weekend they were beaten at home 3-0 by Bournemouth. A 4 game winning run away from home ended in their last game as they lost 1-0 against Newcastle but their majority result on the road has been victories with four so far. But the club have been goal shy away from home with just 8 scored so far at the same time they have conceded just seven.

Team News:

Liverpool: Alexis MacAllister is due back next week but misses out with a knee injury. The following players are out long term; Stefan Bajcetic, Diogo Jota and Andrew Robertson. Thiago Alcantara could return in two weeks from a hip injury and Joel Matip is set to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season. There are big doubts for Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen and this game looks like coming too early for them, they could be assessed for next week though. Victor Lindelof will be assessed for a knock and is only 50/50 to make it, Harry Maguire has been ruled out with a groin injury. Casemiro is out for a month with his hamstring, Anthony Martial is ill and isn’t expected back until next week. Mason Mount isn’t expected back until next week but could be assessed for this game but remains a big doubt. Tyrell Malacia won’t return until next month from a knee injury and with a foot injury Lisandro Martinez is also out until next month. Luke Shaw is expected to be fit after a hamstring scare and Jadon Sancho remains unavailable.

Liverpool vs Man Utd Head to Head:

Last season will not be forgotten in a hurry as Liverpool won this fixture 7-0.

It’s been almost 8 years since Manchester United won away at Liverpool.

In the last 5 meetings Liverpool have scored 21 goals past Manchester United.

Liverpool vs Man Utd Prediction:

Just look at that injury list for Manchester United and start to fear the worst for them. They have shown some form last month, but they look to be creeping back to their old ways of underwhelming results and it is coming at the worst time as we enter the Christmas period and now they will be facing a huge historic rival who are leading the league and are at home with a fantastic record. We only see a Liverpool win here and it could have plenty of goals in it. If Ten Hag was to get anything here it may well be his best 90 minutes in a dug out given how his team have played over the last few weeks, but the amount of injuries that are piling up must be a headache for the Dutchman.

Liverpool will be relentless and will also have extra motivation after Manchester City failed to win again. Watch out for Mohamed Salah who is having another excellent season and is only 3 goals behind Erling Haaland, we expect plenty of joy for the home side and more problems for the visitors.
