England Premier League
Sunday 16th October 2022
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Anfield
Match Preview:
The best two teams in the Premier League will go head to head in what should be an incredibly absorbing fixture at Anfield on Sunday.
Normally Liverpool would be aggressively challenging Manchester City for 1st place but coming into this game neither of these clubs holds that position. But City have given themselves a chance and after 9 games are just a point behind Arsenal, though it could be four by the time this game kicks off. The worry is all Liverpool’s though who have not lost many games this season but their draws have anchored them and they are remarkably down in 11th place with just 10 points and come into this weekend a huge 13 points behind City. Last weekend more misery continued in the league for the Reds with a 3-2 loss at Arsenal, although they had played well and perhaps lost out to a controversial penalty. But Liverpool’s usual excellent defending has seemed fragile so far.
Let’s roll onto the good news for the Reds though and that was in midweek in the Champions League where they destroyed Rangers 7-1 in Scotland. It was quite a performance and proves the gap in quality between England and Scottish league football but also proves that when the Reds click they do so with utter vengeance and no mercy. Mohamed Salah scored a stunning 6 minute hat trick and he has been under fire this season for his lack of goals, but this hat trick could well spark him and the team to performing better in the Premier League. Form for the Reds is just one loss in their last five, though they have won just 2 points from their last nine on offer.
Manchester City could only draw 0-0 away to Copenhagen in the Champions League in midweek, but it didn’t matter. City have been so dominant in their group that they have qualified for the knock out stages already. One Erling Haaland travelled with the team but didn’t play in the game and so he will be well rested ahead of this huge clash. In the league City have been scarily effective winning their last 3 in a row they have scored 13 goals in those games and of course Haaland is breaking all sorts of records and has more in his sights, he already has 15 goals this season and is only 8 short of scoring the same number of goals that Mohamed Salah and Heung-Min Son jointly scored last season to be top goalscorers. To top it all City are currently the only side in the league not to have lost a game.
Team News:
Liverpool: Trent Alexander-Arnold looks to be ruled out due to an ankle injury. An update on Luis Diaz is not good and the play maker won’t return until the end of the year due to his knee injury. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has an outside chance of making the squad but is only rated at 50/50 due to a lack of match fitness it is the same case for Curtis Jones.
Manchester City: AThere are no new injuries for the club but some regulars remain out. John Stones is missing for another two weeks due to his hamstring, Kyle Walker is out for at least another month due to a muscle injury and Kalvin Philllips won’t return until the end of the year because of his shoulder injury.
Liverpool vs Man City Head to Head:
The last time the clubs played each other was in the season opening Community Shield which Liverpool won 3-1.
This fixture finished 2-2 last season.
It’s almost been 2 years since Manchester City last beat Liverpool.
Both teams to score has happened in the last 6 meetings in a row.
Liverpool vs Man City Prediction:
What a game we should witness, the two best teams even if Liverpool haven’t been on their A game so far and also the two best forwards in the league and Salah has also just found form. The worry for Liverpool is a need to win this game and feeling under quite a lot of pressure to perform to a level expected of their fans. Losing this game would just simply underline how their season has been going so far. They will be obliged to take the game to City being at home and we know that City can start games slowly. If Liverpool are to win they would need to put in a grand performance in that first half.
Is it no surprise that the two teams drew both league fixtures last season? That could well happen again but City have an ace up their sleeve in Haaland who famously didn’t have a great game in the Community Shield and will want to make amends for that. The Reds defence has looked weak at times this season and if the pace of Arsenal can cause them problems what can Haaland do? Liverpool will be strong in this game but could simply lose out on a technical level.
