Liverpool vs Leicester: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League

Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

It’s fair to say that Liverpool’s poor start to the season is over, that isn’t always easy to decipher given the six week break we have just had but the Reds have won their last 3 games in a row. Their latest victory came against Aston Villa winning the game 3-1 and considering some key players are out and others have returned from the World Cup that was seen as a very good and positive result.

Liverpool are in 6th place and while their league title hopes look dashed given that they are trailing Arsenal by 15 points, a top four finish is well on. However whatever happens here Jurgen Klopp’s side cannot move up a position but they won’t mind that now their season is all about taking one game at a time and trying to recover their season. While it hasn’t been a great campaign for the Reds so far they have only lost 1 game at home and scored 21 goals and conceded 8, so at least at Anfield the club is pointing in the right direction.

Leicester lost their 9th game of the season on Boxing Day as they went down 3-0 at home to Newcastle. While the Foxes form has improved compared to the beginning of the season pressure remains on Brendan Rodgers to turn the season around. Still there are plenty of teams poorer than the Foxes this season but this game any way you look at it will be very tough for Leicester. It is also a reunion with Rodgers managing Liverpool a few years ago, although he has returned here many times since and the affect will be less.

The last five games have seen 3 wins for Leicester and away from home alongside Southampton they are the only club yet to draw. Though they have lost 5 games on the road they have also won their last 3 in a row beating Wolves, Everton and West Ham.

Team News:

Liverpool: Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz are out long term with a hamstring and knee injury. Arthur is out for at least a month with a muscle injury. Roberto Firmino could be assessed but is expected to miss out here due to a calf injury. James Milner looks set to miss out again as he recovers from his hamstring injury.

Leicester: Ryan Bertrand and Jonny Evans are out long term and remain sidelined. James Maddison isn’t expected to be out for a long time but looks set to miss out once again with a knee injury. Dennis Praet is out with a rib injury and not due back for at least two weeks.

Liverpool vs Leicester Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool won this fixture 2-0.

Liverpool have won 7 of the last 10 meetings.

Leicester haven’t beaten Liverpool away from home since 2000.

There is a 70% chance to see over 2.5 goals.

Liverpool vs Leicester Prediction:

We don’t expect Liverpool to have too many problems here. The Reds really started well against Aston Villa in their last game and that would have pleased the fans. There is an intent to move on from the beginning of the season which destroyed their title chances but that doesn’t mean that the season has to be a write off and there is still lots to play for. Mohamed Salah who by his standards has struggled at times will be delighted to have scored on the restart of the season and we think being at home he is nailed on to score here.

Leicester won’t be afraid to come forward and they have every chance to score also, but the worry when facing Liverpool away from home is that you can lose but you don’t want to get slaughtered so the Foxes will be giving up a lot of possession. We can’t see past a Reds victory but the better value is in the ht/ft and we think the home side will come out on fire like they did against last week against Aston Villa.
