England Premier League
Saturday 29th October 2022
Kick off at 7:45pm BST
Venue: Anfield
Match Preview:
In Europe Liverpool can do no wrong and they have easily qualified for the knock out stages of the Champions League after a good win over Ajax away from home in midweek. But the same cannot be said of their Premier League campaign so far and it has certainly been a slow start from Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Last weekend felt like a new low as they lost 1-0 away to Nottingham Forest, and it felt as though it made no sense given that Liverpool had just beaten and deserved to beat Manchester City in the previous game. But the Reds season is coming down to this; they are still utterly brilliant at home but poor away, so they will be happy, one would presume to be returning back to Anfield for this clash.
Liverpool come into this weekend in 8th place and are 12 points behind Arsenal, however they are only 5 points from 4th place and have a game in hand over the team currently occupying that position, Newcastle. But it really has been home form that has kept the club afloat with 14 of their 16 points coming here. Behind Manchester City, the Reds have scored the most goals at home with 17 so far, however their last two home games have both finished with 1-0 victories.
Jesse Marsch is under considerable pressure as manager of Leeds and his team come into this fixture having lost their last 4. After a bright start they have dropped down to 18th place and have 9 points and only goal differene is keeping them off the bottom. Last weekend they lost 3-2 at home to Fulham and before that they lost against Leicester who have also struggled in this campaign.
Team News:
Liverpool: Naby Keita has some fitness issues and remains a doubt to return. Jordan Henderson has a slight knock but is being tipped to be fine. Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are out until after the World Cup with a knee and hamstring injury respectively.
Leeds: Tyler Adams is a doubt because of his calf strain, Liam Cooper has a glute injury but will be assessed. Joe Gelhardt has a knee injury for now it isn’t thought to be serious and will be assessed. Leo Fuhr Hjelde and Archie Gray are only 50/50 to make their returns from a muscle and toe injury.
Liverpool vs Leeds Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 6-0 to Liverpool.
It’s been 13 games and 21 years since Leeds last beat Liverpool.
Liverpool have scored 9 goals past Leeds in the last two games.
Liverpool vs Leeds Prediction:
Liverpool are around 1.25 to win this game so there won’t be many takers on them doing so. They have been out of sorts as we all know but at the end of the day they are still a very dangerous side and have more or less been flawless at home. They are also facing a poor and under confident side in Leeds and one could be reminded of how Bournemouth’s game ended up here a few months ago. Not only did they lose 9-0 but their manager was sacked too and the omens do not look good for Marsch if his team are heavily beaten.
Leeds are going to set up to defend and frustrate but this won’t stop Liverpool if they click and score early but for Leeds it is about keeping the score respectable and knowing they were in the game for a long period. Still the Reds could score 3 or 4 goals here and that will be the market we will be concentrating on. Klopp’s team have provided a few shocks this season, but we don’t see that happening this weekend.
