Liverpool vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 24th April 2022
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

The 289th Merseyside derby is a huge one for different reasons. Liverpool will know if Manchester City have won or not and they will have been expected to beat Watford which means that this is a must win game for the Reds. In a way Everton could help themselves with a famous victory and damage Liverpool’s chances of winning the league all in 90 minutes but make no mistake the Reds will be huge favourites to win this game.

Liverpool came into this weekend just 1 point behind Manchester City, many will expect it to be 4 by the time this game kicks off but even if City have had a shocking result on Saturday Liverpool need to win and probably need to win all of their remaining games to have a chance of winning the league. Form has been exceptional for Jurgen Klopp’s side who have only dropped two points in the last 3 months and that came away to Manchester City in a 2-2 draw. Liverpool aren’t losing games and are unbeaten at Anfield in the league this season. They have also made it to the semi-finals of the Champions League and the final of the FA Cup as they chase a quadruple.

Everton could only draw 1-1 against Leicester in midweek but there was huge relief at the club given that they were losing the game until the 92nd minute. That point could be very important at the end of the season. When the teams played at Goodison Park Everton were crushed 4-1 and the gulf in quality between the sides is currently huge. To top it off Everton has by far the worst away record in the league where they have won just 6 points from 45 and won just 1 game on the road so far. They are conceding on average 2 goals per game and their last away game ended in a 3-2 defeat against Burnley after being 2-1 up at half time against their relegation rivals. Talking of Burnley Everton will also know beforehand if Burnley have won their game and if so it would mean that Everton begin this game in the relegation zone and would be 2 points behind, scary times at Everton indeed.

Team News:

Liverpool: Roberto Firmino has a foot injury but it isn’t expected to be serious and he should return for this game. The Reds have no other injury worries.

Everton: Dominic Calvert-Lewin has a thigh injury and will miss the next 10 days at least. Nathan Patterson and Andros Townsend are out for the season.

Liverpool vs Everton Head to Head:

Last season Everton achieved a rare win at Anfield with a 2-0 victory their first away from home in this meeting in over 20 years.

In 12 years Everton have beaten Liverpool just once.

Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Liverpool won 4-1.

There is a 60% chance to see under 2.5 goals.

Liverpool vs Everton Prediction:

Liverpool are huge odds on to win the game and not many will be backing them as there is no value. At the same time you can understand why Liverpool are odds on because the gulf between the club is really that big. This is a derby though and that can count for something. Everton need to be focused and physical but the worry for the Toffees is how easy they can get cut open and their defence has, at times, been shocking this season. Such is the gulf that even if Everton came away with a draw here it would feel like a real surprise.

Despite the poor odds it's impossible to logically back Everton when the gulf in class is so much and Everton's away record is so poor, therefore we will use the "-1.5 asian handicap" market to increase the odds, meaning Liverpool will need to win by a margin of 2 or more goals. Whatever happens on Sunday Everton are in a for an incredibly tough game.

Liverpool vs Everton Betting Tips:

Asian handicap (-1.5 Liverpool) at 1.55
