Liverpool vs Everton: Preview & Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 21st October 2023
Kick off at 12:30pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Sometimes we can come into these Merseyside derbies and it is difficult to tell who will come out the better, but at other times which includes the last 20 years we pretty much know that Liverpool will be installed as favorites and should have few problems. This is the case for this, the 294th meeting between the sides. Given also that the game is at Anfield it's going to add on to the complexity of the game for Everton.

Liverpool have started the season strong and with authority however they have gone their last two games without a win. Both times they were away from home as they lost 2-1 against Tottenham and then drew 2-2 against Brighton. The Reds have fallen back to 4th place after 8 games although the gap to the top is just three points. Liverpool’s last home game finished in a 3-1 win over West Ham and each time so far they have scored 3 goals at home and have a 100% record here.

Everton’s form has improved recently and they come into this game with two wins from their last three games. Those victories came against Brentford and Bournemouth. Sandwiched into that was a very worrying defeat at home to Luton though and this game is obviously a huge step up for Sean Dyche’s side. Everton are in 16th place with seven points and even though there has been a marked improvement in recent weeks there is no denying that the team has had many poor results so far. Perhaps the good news is that Everton are creating chances and have been unlucky on some occasions. Despite playing poor away from home the Toffees have gone their last two games undefeated with a win over Brentford and a draw against Sheffield United.

Team News:

Liverpool: Curtis Jones is suspended and not back until next month. Cody Gakpo is 50/50 following his knee injury and will be assessed. Andrew Robertson looks set to miss out with a shoulder injury. Thiago Alcantara has fitness issues and is a doubt and Stefan Bajcetic remains sidelined with a calf injury.

Everton: There are no new injuries ahead of the game for the club but Seamus Coleman remains out after recovering from injury because of a lack of match fitness and isn’t expected back until the end of the month. Dele Alli remains sidelined with a hip injury and Andre Gomes is out with his calf injury.

Liverpool vs Everton Head to Head:

Last season this fixture finished 2-0 to Liverpool.

It’s been 5 games going back two years since Everton beat Liverpool.

The last three games have all seen under 2.5 goals.

Liverpool vs Everton Prediction:

Playing Liverpool has been a problem for Everton over the years but playing them away from home has been even worse. Granted Everton came here in 2021 and won 2-0 but this was during the pandemic with no fans present. Take that result out and Everton haven’t won here since 1999. Liverpool don’t quite look back to their best but they remain strong and not many people will expect Jurgen Klopp’s side to be dropping too many points at home. They are scoring goals and looking dangerous once more. As for Everton some of their play has been encouraging but they have lost this season to sides a few levels below Liverpool and we don’t expect to see a surprise result at the weekend. Everton have been bullish and Sean Dyche has bigged up Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s strengths but on the face of it the Reds look to have more energy and quality and we see a home win here.

At 1.30 to win Liverpool are not an easy choice to back, recent derby games have been under 2.5 goals so let’s look into different markets for some value and perhaps Everton will surprise the Reds at times in this game which should live up to a good old fashioned billing of blistering football and….cards.
