Liverpool vs Crystal Palace: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Wednesday 24th June 2020
Kick off at 8:15pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Liverpool didn’t look themselves in the Merseyside derby against Everton on Sunday. There were scant chances for both sides as the game finished 0-0. The irony at the beginning of the match seeing the current European champions having to come out of a portacabin in Everton’s car park should not have been lost on most, and it really set the tone for the rest of the match.

The Reds will be happy to be back at home even with no fans and concentrate on inching closer to the league title. At Everton the title was impossible because Manchester City had beaten Arsenal a few days prior. And the same is to be of this match, another game that could have been the title decider. This is because of Manchester City’s emphatic 5-0 drubbing of Burnley on Monday night. No matter what City do Liverpool need just 5 points and this match could provide 3 of them.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have dropped just 7 points this season and 4 of those have been in their past three games. They are the only side in the league though to have a 100% record with 15 wins from as many games and they are scoring almost 3 goals a game on average at home.

Crystal Palace have won 4 games in a row now as they restarted the league in fine fashion by beating Bournemouth 2-0 away from home. In those matches Palace have yet to concede a goal and because of the break they haven’t shipped a goal since February when they played Everton.

The Eagles have lost just one of their last five games and that includes forcing a 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

Team News:

Liverpool: James Milner looks set to be ruled out of this clash with a hamstring injury picked up against Everton. Joel Matip has a toe injury and could also miss the game, both players are being tipped to return quickly though

Crystal Palace: Martin Kelly has a calf injury but will be assessed. Jeffrey Schlupp has a knock as does James Tomkins but both with face late tests ahead of the game.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Head to Head:

Earlier this season in the reverse fixture Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 2-1.

Liverpool have won the last six meetings in a row between the teams.

Last season this fixture ended 4-3 to Liverpool.

3 of the last 4 games have seen over 2.5 goals.

Sadio Mane has scored in the last 5 games when Liverpool have played Crystal Palace.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Prediction:

Palace will pose some threats because they are in a safe position now and are doing so well in 9th place with 42 points that they can dream bigger and think of a European place. They will have chances to score and in the past whilst not always getting the right result they have challenged Liverpool and given them a run for their money, this match won’t always be plain sailing.

At the other end Liverpool will be relishing putting in a good performance. They will look at current champions Manchester City and see that they have scored 9 goals and conceded 0 in their first two games back, and Liverpool will want to put in a good display here.

The interesting story is how Sadio Mane loves playing against Palace, and therefore we shouldn’t ignore him to get on the score sheet in this game. We should see an end to end game which could start off at a fast pace as Liverpool look to vanquish a very dull performance against Everton, and Palace will react which means we have the potential to see an exciting game of football. Liverpool are big odds on around 1.20 for the win so it may be best to look into different markets.
