Liverpool vs Aston Villa: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Sunday 5th July 2020
Kick off at 4.30pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

Liverpool are the new champions who will be playing their first game at Anfield since being crowned title winners on June 25th. The only problem is that there will be zero fans to celebrate. The players won’t mention it so much now, but as time goes on and the world tries to get back to normality the stories are sure to come out from the team. No one can deny that without the fans there is a sense of an empty feeling.

The Reds will try and motivate themselves in this game, and the only one left now is to try and get to 100 points or even break Manchester City’s points haul record. Liverpool lost their 2nd game of the season against Manchester City going down 4-0. On the face of it it was a poor result but at the same time it was clear that Liverpool had been celebrating for a good few days, which would have been normal.

The club look emotionally drained and there is really nothing else for them to play for, however at the same time they won’t want to finish the season on a whimper after being so dominant and we should expect a good display here from a club who still has a 100% record at home this season.

Aston Villa really need the points and they will be hoping that Jurgen Klopp’s team are not 100% focused. Villa are in 18th place but just one point from safety. The good news for them is that Watford just above have to play Chelsea this weekend and they will know the result of that game before this kicks off.

Villa’s last game ended in a 1-0 defeat at Wolves and Dean Smith’s side have no wins since the restart. They have the second to worst away record in the league winning just 9 points from a possible 48. They have lost 11 times this season on the road and are conceding on average 2 goals per game.

Team News:

Liverpool: Dejan Lovren should be back with the club after picking up a minor knock. He is the only new concern for the club ahead of this game.

Aston Villa: Matt Targett has a hamstring injury and has been ruled out of this game. Frederic Guilbert is being pencilled in to return for this game after his knee injury but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Head to Head:

In the reverse fixture earlier in the season Liverpool won 2-1.

Liverpool have scored 11 goals against Aston Villa in the last 3 league meetings.

Aston Villa did beat Liverpool 5-0 in the Carabao Cup last December but that Liverpool team was largely made up of reserves and youngsters.

There is a 60% chance to see both teams to score.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Prediction:

Much like the victory over Crystal Palace which Liverpool won 4-0 we see that happening again here. Klopp is a proud man and whilst he can take a defeat to City, he wouldn’t have liked the score line much. Liverpool will play like champions at their first home match and will want to protect their unbeaten record here. Villa just lack quality all over the pitch compared to their opponents and we should expect Liverpool to score a few goals here and ease to victory, no chance for Villa in this game, but backing a straight Liverpool win is difficult as they are big odds on so look into different markets.

Liverpool vs Aston Villa Betting Tips:

Liverpool to win with a -1 goal handicap start at 1.80

1st half asian handicap (-0.5 Liverpool) at 1.70

Anytime goalscorer: Mohamed Salah at 1.80
