Liverpool vs Arsenal: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Monday 28th September 2020
Kick off at 8pm BST
Venue: Anfield

Match Preview:

The rivalry between these two sides goes back decades but mention Liverpool v Arsenal at Anfield and we are always reminded of that historic title decider in 1989 in which the Gunners won the league with literally the last kick of the game.

A lot has happened since then, indeed football seems unrecognisable now compared to then in every aspect. Still the rivalry is real and these fixtures are always explosive, two old legendary great teams, in football you can’t beat that.

The champions have started the season well winning both of their games, a 4-3 win over Leeds was followed by a solid 2-0 win at Chelsea. The Reds have looked just as strong as last season and in the Carabao Cup they made light work of Lincoln demolishing the club 7-2. In a twist of irony they will again face Arsenal in the cup competition, in their next game which is also at Anfield.

Arsenal have started the season well too and look much stronger than the last under Mikel Arteta. The Gunners have beaten Fulham and West Ham- both London clubs of course and also overcame Leicester 2-0 away in the Carabao Cup. Confidence will be high with the club and it will be fascinating to see how this game plays out. Liverpool will be the favourites but everyone will understand that Arsenal will have the tools to have their say in the game too and will want to give their best performance.

Team News:

Liverpool: Jordan Henderson has been ruled out with a thigh injury, Joseph Gomez should be included in the squad at least on the bench. Joel Matip is out with a muscle injury. James Milner should be back as he had only a minor calf problem.

Arsenal: Cedric is back training after his calf injury and will be assessed. Sokratis is fighting to be in team and is back training and will be looked at. Kieran Tierney looks to have recovered from his groin injury but will face a late decision.

Liverpool vs Arsenal Head to Head:

Last season Liverpool beat Arsenal at Anfield 3-1.

In the league Arsenal haven’t won at Liverpool since 2012.

Liverpool have scored 9 goals past Arsenal in the last 3 league meetings.

The last 5 league meetings in a row has seen both teams to score.

Liverpool vs Arsenal Prediction:

Liverpool remained unbeaten at home last season and there isn’t anything to suggest that Arsenal in their current form are going to stop that record. However Henderson will be a big miss and anything less than 100% could see Liverpool run into problems.

Complacency is huge in football, Liverpool know they have the better of Arsenal, they know they are more likely to win trophies this season than them, and they know they will finish higher the Gunners this season. This is their level, Arsenal at this time are the pretenders waiting in the shadows, and are a couple of seasons behind where Liverpool are.

Arsenal will have their moments but we expect 3 wins out of 3 for Jurgen Klopp’s side. We think compared to the Arsenal of old who would attack whatever the opponent and get punished by Liverpool, the Arteta Arsenal is far more cautious and counter attacking against Liverpool, which will help but at Anfield Liverpool will still likely just be too strong.
