England Premier League
Sunday 9th April 2023
Kick off at 4:30pm BST
Venue: Anfield
Match Preview:
In the last five years roles have been switched between these two famous clubs as Liverpool have been title challengers and Arsenal took steps backwards but this season Arsenal are back and are in 1st place, and if they win here they will take huge steps to collecting their first league title in 19 years.
Liverpool have shown some bright moments but they have continued to struggle this season and the fall off has been huge. Take this for an example, had Jurgen Klopp for whatever reason quit Liverpool last summer and a new manager had the same season Klopp is having now they would have surely been sacked by now. Of course Klopp doesn’t deserve the same fate, he has plenty of credit in the bank but it has been a damning season nonetheless for the Reds. Liverpool are coming into this game having lost to Bournemouth and Manchester City, and in their last game they drew 0-0 away to Chelsea.
So what is the objective for Liverpool? With 43 points they are 10 points behind 4th place and with 10 games left that seems too much to ask that they will suddenly find consistency while other teams will fall away. A Europa League finish is just about on but that could be over by the end of this weekend unless they win here and keep up the pressure on 5th place. One also has to wonder if it wouldn’t work in Liverpool’s favour to miss out on European football for next season, financially it wouldn’t but they could take the hit and quite frankly much of the squad looks tired.
Arsenal keep on roaring and keep on winning and they came into this weekend 8 points in front of 2nd placed Manchester City. That could be reduced to just 5 by the time this game is played but Arsenal’s objective must remain the same and that is to win games. The Gunners have won 8 games in a row and are showing champions mentality and form but Anfield has always been a tricky ground to come too that’s why it is felt that if they can win here it would be huge for them.
Arsenal have scored 11 goals in their last 3 games and that is always a terrific sign that everything is on course to reach targets and the clubs last game finished in a 4-1 victory over Leeds. The Gunners last away game was a 3-0 win against Fulham and on the road they have the same record in the league with 34 points from a possible 42 and Mikel Arteta’s side have won their last 3 games in a row- for Arsenal it is all praise at this current time.
Team News:
Liverpool: Luis Diaz is expected to miss out again due to a lack of match fitness but if so could return in 10 days. Thiago Alcantara also has fitness issues but will be assessed.
Arsenal: Eddie Nketiah remains a major doubt to be ready for this one as he recovers from an ankle injury. William Saliba is out with a muscle injury. Mohamed Elneny and Takehiro Tomiyasu look set to miss the rest of the season.
Liverpool vs Arsenal Head to Head:
Last season this fixture finished 4-0 to Liverpool.
Earlier in the season in the reverse fixture Arsenal won 3-2 but it was their first in the last six meetings.
It’s been 10 years since Arsenal beat Liverpool away in a league match.
Liverpool vs Arsenal Prediction:
On form the call is easy and Arsenal shouldn’t just win but should put Liverpool to the sword. However despite how poor Liverpool have been this season by their standards they still have a strong home record and can stun teams just ask Manchester United. Liverpool’s season is basically over but at the same time they have pride and the players you would have to believe will be giving everythin to remind the Gunners that they are still a force to be reckoned with.
Arsenal’s form here is poor but this season they are a different team, therefore we will back the away side with the draw covered on the refund.
