Leicester vs Southampton: Preview and Prediction

England Premier League
Saturday 11th January 2020
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: King Power Stadium

Match Preview:

The naysayers repeatedly said lets judge Leicester by mid January when they were doing so well a few months back. Well they are still doing very well, because they are currently in 2nd place, and a point ahead of Manchester City. Leicester won’t win the league and they may even lose 2nd place but they look almost guaranteed now of qualifying for the Champions League and that would be a massive achievement under Brendan Rodgers.

The Foxes come into this game having won back to back matches beating West Ham and then Newcastle. The Newcastle win was highly impressive as they went to St James' and won 3-0 inflicting only Newcastle’s 3rd home defeat this season.

What has been surprising about the club is how many goals they have in them. They are the 3rd highest scorers in the league with 46 goals, only 3 goals behind Liverpool. They have the 3rd best home record in the league and have lost just once at the King Power, the recently 4-0 crushing by Liverpool.

Of course the reverse of this weekend's fixture earlier in the season will not be forgotten by either side for some time. Leicester won 9-0 in an evening of shame for the Saints.

That terrible loss may well have been a blessing in disguise as Southampton since then have rapidly improved. At the time relegation looked on the cards but week by week the team have come together and come into this match having gone 4 games unbeaten, 3 of those games being wins. They have climbed to 12th place but on form they would be in 4th.

It has been quite a recovery and in that time they have beaten quality teams like Chelsea and Tottenham, so have proven they can step up too. The Saints have won 40% of their away games but have won their last two games on the road.

Team News:

Leicester : Wes Morgan could miss the game with a groin injury. James Maddison will be assessed after his head injury which is thought to be minor.

Southampton: Yann Valery is back in training after a viral illness but has been ruled out of this game. Other than this the Saints do not have any new injury concerns.

Leicester vs Southampton Head to Head:

Last season Southampton won this game 2-1.

The last time the teams met Leicester thrashed Southampton 9-0.

Leicester have not beaten Southampton when at home since 2016 going back 4 games.

Leicester vs Southampton Prediction:

Can Leicester keep on winning and also keep Manchester City behind them? They have the quality to win this game and have been excellent at home. However there is a feeling that Southampton come here with a lot of promise and hope. They have done well at this stadium in recent times and obviously the 9-0 whitewash will be on their minds, how better to try and erase it with a good performance here. The Saints are in their best form of the season and they might just be able to shock Leicester here and come away something. The value is certainly on them to do so, and therefore we can back them with a good handicap.
