England Premier League
Monday 26th December 2022
Kick off at 3pm GMT
Venue: King Power Stadium
Match Preview:
It wasn’t too long ago that Brendan Rodgers was in a no way out situation and his job was on the line with Leicester rock bottom of the league. However the Foxes have improved ten fold and have won 4 of their last five games and moved up to 13th place with 17 points.
This is a game that back in October would have felt like a walk in the park for Newcastle but the Foxes have their act together now and just before the break they had won their last two. Those were victories against Everton and West Ham and impressive ones at that given that they were away from home. Victory here could see Rodgers team scraping into the top 10 and that would be a remarkable feat after their poor start, however they would have to overcome a side who has lost just 1 game this season.
Newcastle look like a revelation and despite big money owners because the club haven’t brought in the most recognisable stars in world football they are doing an incredible job and are well ahead of their project. When we left the Premier League for the break the Magpies were the most form side in the league having won their last 6 games. Eddie Howe’s side have climbed to 3rd place and are only seven points behind league leaders Arsenal because of the amount of draws they accumulated at the beginning of the season. They are also only two points shy of Manchester City in 2nd place although the champions do have a game in hand over them.
Newcastle’s last game finished in a 1-0 win over Chelsea and in their previous two games before that stuck 4 goals each past Southampton and Aston Villa. On the road Howe’s team have the third best record behind Arsenal and Manchester City and have won 12 points from a possible 21 although they are unbeaten in their last four.
Team News:
Leicester: Caglar Soyuncu is sidelined with his hamstring, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has a minor knock and will be assessed. Jonny Evans is only 50/50 to make this encounter due to a calf injury, Ricardo Pereira isn’t due back until February because of his Achilles.
Newcastle: Alexander Isak looks to be a major doubt still with his on going thigh injury. Paul Dummett remains out with his calf, Emil Krafth is not due back until February due to his knee injury.
Leicester vs Newcastle Head to Head:
Last season Leicester won 4-1 in this fixture.
Both teams to score has occurred in 3 of the last four meetings.
The last 6 meetings in a row has seen over 2.5 goals.
Leicester vs Newcastle Prediction:
Newcastle are a great price to win this game but of course it does come with risk, more risk than it did in November. The worry is that this season is unique due to the World Cup break and we may see two different seasons in one, a chapter 1 and 2 if you like. We know that Newcastle are the most in form side in the league but does that hold any water after a six week break? Well we are about to find out.
Leicester are at home and they have evidently improved but they will come up against a Newcastle side that love playing with one another and they have a very exciting project under Howe, it is really working for the club and they have goals everywhere in the side too. Newcastle can certainly expose Leicester even if the Foxes have found form themselves. We should look out for Callum Wilson, he did travel to the World Cup with England but didn’t get much game time but when he did he looked hungry and he will surely bring that passion back into the Premier League and quite frankly be raring to go. This could well be a great price on the Magpies to tease the Foxes and walk off possibly with their seventh win in a row.
